Jeffrey lewis has a way of making optimism seem actually practical. Hearing him for the first time.. it just clicked immediately. I’m eternally grateful for him, his mind, his comics, and for this song.
Once, during a particularly rough shift, I played ‘Life’ maybe about 15 times on repeat. I didn’t even mean to, nor did I have it queued, I just kept hitting the button on my headphones to manually replay it each time I got to the end. I just HAD to hear it again and I soaked in those lyrics every single time around.
‘Life is a story, don't you doubt Bad times give ya something to talk about The next time you think youre all worn out, Remember life is a story, Dontcha doubt.. It only takes a day for everything to turn around’

i didn’t quite appreciate this song as much as i do now until seeing it performed as the closer to his live show… such a great encapsulation of the feeling of years of life under very late capitalism weighing on you how hard can you go, and for how long can you sustain it? when the force that fights back doesn’t ever relax it’s so relentless, oh how long can you defend against a cheat code? at a furious pace, with a smile on your face

The days I don’t want to kill myself are extraordinary. Deep bass. All the people in the streets waiting for their high fives and leaping, I mean leaping, when they see me. I am the sun-filled god of love. Or at least an optimistic under-secretary. There should be a word for it. The days you wake up and do not want to slit your throat. Money in the bank. Enough for an iced green tea every weekday and Saturday and Sunday! It’s like being in the armpit of a Hammond B3 organ. Just reeks of gratitude and funk. The funk of ages. I am not going to ruin my love’s life today. It’s like the time I said yes to gray sneakers but then the salesman said Wait. And there, out of the back room, like the bakery’s first biscuits: bright-blue kicks. Iridescent. Like a scarab! Oh, who am I kidding, it was nothing like a scarab! It was like bright. blue. fucking. sneakers! I did not want to die that day. Oh, my God. Why don’t we talk about it? How good it feels. And if you don’t know then you’re lucky but also you poor thing. Bring the band out on the stoop. Let the whole neighborhood hear. Come on, Everybody. Say it with me nice and slow    no pills  no cliff  no brains on the floor Bring the bass back.    no rope  no hose  not today, Satan. Every day I wake up with my good fortune and news of my demise. Don’t keep it from me. Why don’t we have a name for it? Bring the bass back. Bring the band out on the stoop. Hallelujah!

If I've ever talked with you about music, we've probably talked about LUCY. The ultra-prolific Western Mass cult hero has been the most important artist in my life for the past seven years.
In 2024, he released three albums. Beyond that, he's cooking on at least four active side projects. In my book, everything he releases is required-listening.
So it would be impossible to choose a true favorite. The depth of LUCY's catalogue is one of the special things about his work. But I narrowed it down by focusing on his last release: Cooper B. Handy's Album Vol. 9.
This one is dense -- a lotta gems. Here's a playlist of all the vol. 9 songs I really hope you'll listen to. Among those, "Folk Song" stands out. I'm obsessed with the switch-up from the verse to the chorus. Every day, I walk around with a million LUCY lines floating in my head. This song has a bunch of them:
Who you gonna call when the levee runs dry? Said fuck the cops -- cuz they got the wrong girl and they got the wrong guy
You got a thing for the world I can see it in your eyes Said fuck the cops -- cuz they got the wrong girl and they got the wrong guy
They put him in the ground and I see him in the sky I got a thing for the world you can see it in my eyes.
Money -- people kill for that money ...
Who you gonna call when you wanna know why? They put you on hold, and you watch another day go by
