I liked it but I actually didnāt love this movie as much as I hoped I would after having heard about it for years. Given my name, I did laugh at the Hooters-esque restaurant she worked at being called Big Taters (her sleazy boss there was a major highlight to me). The fashion was like a time capsule of early 2010s style in the most hilarious way and the character archetypes in her friend group felt very familiar. The lead actress really carries the weight of the film and she does it remarkably well. The execution left something to be desired⦠I definitely prefer its spiritual companion, Under the Silver Lake by far. It took that same conspiratorial concept of the dark underbelly of Hollywood but ran with it in a much more strange and fantastical direction. but Starry Eyes is fine for what it isāa pre-me-too scathing indictment of the Hollywood system in horror wrapping.
I had literally never seen this movie before, so my partner and I watched it the other night. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it!
There are some things that definitely haven't aged well. The film attempted to critique the fashion industry and fatphobia, but as a work from an era where women like Sarah Silverman or America Ferrera were considered "overweight," it strikes me as a bitter irony instead. Hollywood has, and continues, to contribute to the very culture it seeks to skewer.
However, moving beyond that, I found it to be a layered, nuanced, well-scripted story examining not only the fashion industry, but influence, power dynamics, gender, and beauty standards. Aesthetically, it perfectly captures this specific era in America and its magazine culture. I would go so far as to say this is one of those historically, culturally significant films. I'll be interested to see how the sequel fares!
saw enigma early bc of a film fest but itās now on hbo! drop dead gorgeous was underwhelming (imo) and unfortunately i hated friendship, it made me anxious. saving face made me cry in a good way
If you are girl or girl adjacent this movie is the movie. featuring emma stone with black hair, a very cute steampunk atmosphere, TONS of mutton sleeves, and surprisingly tenderhearted depictions of sex work. It is supposed to be a fantasy/comedy movie but let me tell you I cried a LOT. 10/10 I will defend this movie with my life
My dad teases me about how when I was a little kid, my favorite thing to do when I was on the landline phone with somebodyābe it a relative or one of my best friendsāwas to breathlessly describe the things that were in my bedroom so that they could have a mental picture of everything I loved and chose to surround myself with, and where I sat at that moment in time. Perfectly Imperfect reminds me of that so thanks for always listening and for sharing with me too š
