I've been teaching a sewing camp. Today, for the first time, I had a girl sew through her finger with the machine. Not the end of the world, but a little gory. One of the admin I had to report it to was so bitchy about this little girl. Being young and clumsy once, it hurt to listen to an adult talk so meanly behind a child's back. Let alone one who is earnestly putting the work into her passions. She's not giving up either, I'll see her back at the machine tomorrow. Kids learn so differently and at such different paces. Some adults will just never understand that. What I don't understand is why those adults are working in our schools.

idk if your question is rhetorical or not — but i think i have an answer. after working in corporate and in education as a teacher, my understanding is that our world prioritizes comfort over accountability. and unfortunately a lot of people never face or have to deal with the consequences of their actions. and it’s often rewarded. our systems are literally built on this principle. they’re also incredibly ableist. this is why those teachers are there. you can’t change those people, but you can crack the door to let some light in by asking non-judgmental questions when they say some crazy shit. if you can throw some shade, you can ask really good questions that will make people think!! remember that these people are honestly at their core, emotionally stunted. and whenever you get the chance, always gas the students up!!! they can use all the love you can give em!

@HAILEYD4WN yay i’m glad :) a good Q is, “would you judge a fish for not being able to climb a tree?” i‘m serious about gassin the kids up though, always tell them they’re doing so much better than they can imagine and to never give up ♥♥♥

i’ve seen a massive uptick of posts where teachers are talking about how awful and cruel their students are and it turns out they teach at a middle school. like yeah. of course theyre evil. theyre 13. being evil is kind of a requirement for that age. there seems to be a cultural amnesia as to what it was like to be young and trying to figure stuff out. if anything, i feel like kids these days are more understanding of diversity and any generation before them. a current middle schooler wouldn’t call me a queer, they’d make a much more cutting and hurtful remark about my appearance #progress also if your first reaction to your students misbehaving is to kvetch about it on reddit, maybe find a different line of work

This was sad yet fascinating. I'm sorry. I laughed a little bit at the title 😭. I know it's hard to deal with children but how are you making children your enemies?! Especially at such a young age.

my freshman year of high school i went to a new school and i didnt know how to do school well bc i have learning disabilities. it was an academically rigorous traditional school and i forgot to do my homework bc i was bad at planning ahead and like generally keeping track of things. anyway like the first week of this new school i get to class and got called on about the homework and i had to say in front of the class that i forgot. this teacher was known to be an odd ball/old school and he yelled at me and sent me out of class and asked me and told me only to return when i was prepared and ready to learn. needless to say i was stunned and packed up my stuff and ran out crying. i mean i was literally like 14.
this then became the folklore everyone told new students about this teacher and it got passed down but no one realized it was me and when i became like a senior i would tell freshman and they were like that was you?!?!
anyway this teacher years later got clocked for sexual misconduct and buying kids alcohol lol

I specifically made plans this year to be alone on my actual birthday. And it’s been so nice. The best in years, no tears! I got up early to walk around a wildflower garden, tried a new coffee shop. Read a lot. Thrifted. Sushi for dinner and a peach crepe for dessert. The only thing missing was that I never went and celebrated with my favorite paintings at the museum but I’ll have a belated party with them later. Happy birthday to me.
