im Thinking mainly of Summer Break here. I woke up whenever I wanted to after a late night of watching cartoon networks adult swim which was pretty much just sexy anime back then interspersed with some music news and vibes. I drank a fuck ton of Coke Gold which I never see anymore but it‘s the caffeine free version. I had keys to my apartment but no money so I’d take a walk and then come back home and watch more tv or draw and listen to my cd’s. I used my lunch money during the year to buy cds every other week from Best Buy or virgin records which was definitely the coolest it could have been in the early 2000’s - everything was red lighting and industrial steel and the Distiller’s first cd was $7. my parents sent me off to hang with some of their friends parents out of state and they let me have free reign over their golf cart and I’d drive around in it all day blasting NOFX and Crazytown and Alkaline Trio - definitely the reason all the boys wanted to hang on my golf cart that summer was the fact that I brought my battery operated boom box with me everywhere. The girls followed on their own carts and decided they didn’t like me even tho I always asked them to come hang. When I got an older (2006?) and had more money I started getting loosies and beers at the corner store and would smoke and drink in the park with my friends and no one ever said anything to us. we snuck into MGMT in the park and did drugs under the trees and danced with glitter on our faces and stupid string bands around our foreheads. There was this community garden in the East Village we went to a lot that had chickens in it so we called it Cock Park - they had a tree house we’d drink 40’s in and cackle until the park closed, then we’d move to the church yard. I can’t stress enough how many underground music venues there were - none of them carded, all were illegal and all served jungle juice out of coolers. we got Fucked up, dude. And the best of all was the fuckin house party. Someone’s rich parents were always out of town and we little assholes would swarm their teenager occupied brownstone like little monsters. Lots of drinking and drugs and sex all over the place. i Feel bad for the kids who had to clean their houses in the morning all hungover and stressing out.
But yeah, it was cool.

In 2019 I lived in Portland, Oregon for a summer and was a guitarist and keyboardist for a band that could be best described as pure angst. The frontman turned out to be a total monster, we wrote basically the same song for an EP, we put out a single music video, I got electrocuted doing a show at a now closed venue, but it was an experience you should enjoy at least once!

Concert venue in downtown LA, it still exists but anytime I’ve been in the last five years it didn’t feel the same as it did when I went as a bleach blond 16 year old.
I would go three times a week, each for $5 a show, and feel so cool in this tiny brick warehouse and meeting weird people and developing crushes on random girls in the pit and getting stoned in the alley between sets (same alley that the cover of an old surf curse EP was shot in, for you real Heads).
I don’t live in LA anymore so I can’t really speak on what it’s like now, but some of my fondest teenage memories involve The Smell in some way

in 2014 at the church my parents got married in. Beautiful seated show in pews, surrounded by stained glass, visuals were circular projections of ink being dropped into milk.
Danny Brown in 2013 at a tiny college gymnasium. My parents wouldn’t let me go to the after party. My mom almost didn’t let me go to the show after she listened to XXX and said to me verbatim one Sunday morning before church: “Have you listened to the lyrics?! ‘My dick so big it left stretch marks on her jaw?!?’”
Death Grips in 2015, got punched in the head so hard (by accident) in the pit that I threw up then stayed the night at my friends house in Baltimore before driving 6 hours through rural Pennsylvania the next day to be a counselor at church camp.
Mitski in a small basement venue in 2016 on the night of a comet shower. The first show my husband and I saw together but I had a very unfortunate stomachache, thankfully I could sit down.
Alex G and Porches in 2016 at my favorite now-closed venue. My husband asked him to play “Mis” but he said he didn’t really remember it, thankfully the bassist remembered it so they did and it was lovely.
LVL UP at their final tour in 2018 at another small bar venue. Husband requested “Big Snow” and boy did it rip, spicy hot gumbo!
Honorable mention to Sleater Kinney in 2014 because Lizzo opened from them and she threw me a packet of Famous Amos cookies which is just a funny story to retell today and to think about her opening for Sleater Kinney at one point.
Can’t really pick between them, this is mostly a note to self to remind me of some of my favorite live music experiences. 2010’s was a truly great concert era for me.

Found him at a flea market and kept walking away and then coming back. hes too small to actually be heard from outside so I popped him on the wall by my computer where I can knock him while I’m doing tasks.
