The fabric that the work is made on is called sanyan in Yoruba. Traditionally, sanyan is made of natural silk from caterpillar nests handwoven with white cotton.

I don't know if sanyan is still made like that, but if anybody knows please tell me, I'd be very interested... I learned about this from my godmother and a book called 'Nigerian Body Adornments' by Eve de Negri
