— ok sidebar the fact that our society SUX —
btw: this is entire rec is based on the assumption that you’re graduating from college and you’re in your early 20s.
since we currently exist in that reality, as someone who STILL has $25K in student loan debt is 31 yrs old (and i got other debt 🙄)
you do NOT need to go further into debt to make a difference in this world. some careers you could argue differently (law degree, professor, etc etc). sometimes i procrastinate what i REALLY should be doing with another project to delay starting the other thing. this sometimes is what i think people do with grad school, you kinda wanna avoid starting the real life shit so (some) people go to grad school. or like sometimes i think about social workers and psychologists (they’re either great or they’re not good ppl) like you wanna save the world or you feel bad about racism and the horrible systems that exist in our world, so you read about it and write essays to make yourself feel better — but then those people don’t/can‘t actually work with the populations they studied????? IDKKKKK more to be said, i barely scratched the surface.
my best advice to you is find a job that pays the bills (again sweet jesus baby christ we live in a society 😩 god bless you on this endeavor) and gives you some time to pursue your passions.
answer the following questions 1. what do you want your life to look like? how can you make it look like that in small actions over time? 2. what keeps your fire burning? can you make a living from this that won’t kill your soul? 3. what are your SKILLS? panicked because you feel like you don’t have any??? YA again our society SUCKS. you do have skills, but think about this!!! write those skills down!! OR go learn them!!!!! you can learn most things fore free 99 ;)
lastly: please please please please become financially literate, learn how to budget, live below your means. this more than ANYTHING will help you live a life you WANT to live!!!!! it also cleanses your soul of convenience culture and impulsive spending (there’s definitely a book about this but this short little sentence will have to do) which clears the fucking horrible juju extractive capitalism that sticks to us like glue if we don’t actively try and fight it. we don’t actually need anything, we just need food, water, shelter, and human connection. fuck starbucks, fuck amazon, fuck all that shit! $pend wi$ely and you will live even wi$er :)

Even if you study the statistically highest earning major, that doesn’t guarantee you a job. Unless you’re going for something ultra specific, most jobs just want to see that you have the guts to finish a degree, it doesn’t matter so much what it is. If you have a passion, follow it! It’ll make your time in school that much more enjoyable.
I started college majoring in materials sciences and engineering at a big ten school bc math was my best subject but I was miserableeeee. I thought I had to do the hardest degree possible to be successful in life and I come from a long line of engineers. Now, I feel like I’m following some sort of calling studying apparel at a tech school. Even though it’s not as promising statistically. We’re all gonna die someday anyway.
Also!!! I majorly recommend taking a gap year. That year of real life outside of an academic setting can really sheepdog your priorities.

i'm in community college rn, i had a rough time in high school so i figured id do two catchup/gen ed years before finishing up my degree at a 4 year. we all know its college app season/college result season and oh my god guys i keep seeing these high schoolers shooting for 8% acceptance rate universities and not settling for anything less. like i get it, i do. but am i the only one whos seeing an uptick of kids just applying places just to say they got in ? i feel like i ask a lot of these people about what they want to do/what they're passionate about and why they're majoring in what they're majoring in and they just give me a blank stare. can we PLEASE normalize saving money and taking your time ? you have the rest of your life to work and be miserable paying taxes and pulling your weight at a 9-5. there's literally no shame in community, and I'm so sick and tired of people thinking there is. if you don't know what you want to do, you're allowed to take the time to get there. it's honestly worse to settle on a mediocre major that you don't particularly like just to get your degree faster and say you graduated on time. high school really doesn't give you the time to decide these things so once you reach adulthood it's your responsibility to allocate your time towards it. i really want to see more kids soul searching in a meaningful and responsible way. and if you know what you wanna do and you got into your 8% acceptance rate dream school, more power to you. I'm just saying that seeing a case like that is rare these days and people deserve the time to think and absorb their new responsibilities.

i’m so glad i went to college, long post bc i have so many feelings about it! my disclaimer is that i was really lucky to receive need-based and merit scholarships so despite my family‘s income it ended up not being a financial burden for me. i feel like getting my degree was worth it for a few reasons. the main reason is obvious: going to college really expanded my knowledge; i encountered so many different ideas and it cemented my love for learning. and unlike in high school, i had significant autonomy in choosing what i wanted to explore. besides important things like theory etc, i also was taught skills like using statistical software and academic writing. because of this, i learned my professional and academic interests, so i now have the option to go to grad school or pursue so many different jobs. i also did a few extracurriculars and had campus jobs, which i feel also contributed to my growth. work isn’t the end-all be-all, so the other important reason it was worth it are the personal benefits. college was really a perfect place for growth between high school and “adulthood”. it was a safer space to learn about myself and the world around me, independently but still in a supportive environment. also it was just really fun sometimes! in some ways it was much freer than life with a full-time job. i went to a liberal arts college—so i’m totally biased about that, but—i think it provides a far better education than non-liberal arts programs lol. it took me until my third semester to learn what i wanted to study and that wasn’t a setback at all; i still benefited from those courses and if i didn’t get to different explore subjects that first year, i would not have found my love for the fields i got my degree in. i think college should be about exploration and well-roundedness as much as it is about preparation for the future. and all this isn’t to say colleges are perfect; i have plenty of “ivy tower” criticisms and there were plenty of shitty things i experienced personally and academically bc life is just that way sometimes, but i think for me, the pros of attending still outweigh those cons. in the right place you can get a better idea of what you hope to do in your life, be equipped for that, and grow a lot of confidence in yourself, your dreams and your goals! :) overall it was very worth it and i don’t regret it.

the sincerity of this app is because it’s different from those other apps :/ why do we need metrics on how we socialize? 🫩🫩🫩🫩😮‍💨😮‍💨
i’m curious as much as i am sad about the decision to make the star count visible. is that what its proper name is? or are we calling it likes? 👀
