thereās just nothing like it. it makes all the difference when you can see the physical evidence of the creative and physical challenges of danceā muscles rippling beneath minimal costumes, sweat collecting on the high points of the faces, every expression live and true and experienced alongside the audience. i love dance. so many performersātheme park performers, tv commercial actors, stunt performers, fight choreographersāeither get their start as or continue to work as professional dancers. itās also sad to me that live dance is reduced to an audience falling asleep halfway through a ballet or glancing around bemusedly at modern dancers waving scarves and undulating. there is literally something for everyone.
there are also ways to see live dance on a budgetā the largest performing arts group at my university is an all-level dance group that puts on a show every semester for free, the Joyce Theater has a subscription that allows you to get $10 tickets, and in the city you may be lucky enough to stumble across a street dancer.
go watch somebody dance!!!!
I donāt know anything about ballet, but I enjoy watching it and respect dancers highly. I enjoy going to the theater in my going to the theater clothes and sitting in that dark, cold room hypnotized by beautiful bodies and their superhuman athleticism. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. Sometimes I leave during intermission.
dance is cathartic. iāve been dreaming up all these dances to some of my favorite songs ā usually when iām driving long distances ā and ive been very inspired watching my dance friends do improv challenges. iāve decided to follow along, just in the privacy of my own home and not necessarily recording my every dance move all the time. itās fun seeing what feelings i want to convey somatically and using the space available to me ā even if itās my room, cluttered in crafts supplies.
hi PIā¦ā¦..!!!!
i used to have a workout playlist full of hype songs that i loved⦠and making your own i think is exponentially better than some one-size-fits-all mix full of top 40 hits and soulless āedmā slop (mine is called GAG (gay ass gym) on spotify if you do want to see- i feel like you guys/gals/everyone else will understand me). but i find an album has recovery, warm-ups, and high energy pockets that make for a really satisfying workout. iāve been riding my bike every morning to one of the albums i canāt get enough of- iāll list them below! i think a playlist is great for lifting, stretching, floor workouts, all that, but thereās something so satisfying about a bike ride with a good soundtrack to me. makes life feel more like a movie. my personal recs for rn(may add more soon, im bad at listening to music lol):
- SPEED RUN by frost children (HIGHLY recommend! it feels like it was built for moving to)
- revengeseekerz by jane remover (i cannot get enough of this album. might be my fav of 2025)
- All I Ever Wanted by kelly clarkson (i got the CD as a gift when i was a kid and returned to it recently. just great music imo and perfect for a combination of slow and fast movement)
- Fancy That by pinkpantheress (technically a mixtape, but come on. you knew this was coming. pinkās our girl.) now go outside! enjoy ā°(*“︶`*)āÆā”
i should clarify something. i am generally very bug-positive. i donāt freak out around bees and wasps (mostly, but for that i blame the hornet that stung my right buttcheek when i was 15 and i had to sit in the car for 3 hours with a melting ice pack on the seat), and iām the friend (or gf, if iām to be so lucky) who will catch a spider in a cup and put it outside.
however, the ones that thrive in the house? die. i want all of them dead. i came across this trick on pinterest forever ago, and my god is it satisfying. just spray the fly with windex as it wizzes by, and that little fucker will be on its last gasps in seconds. just be careful around open plates of food!
