though if you can afford to support the artist directly by buying their album or something than that’s much better than like streaming on spotify imo. also an alternative to spotify is demus it’s a free (only ios :( tho ) streaming platform which uses youtube webview to stream music plus they have only silent banner ads nothing like the free aids spotify version and they don’t invest in Ai military tech
I went Spotify cold turkey and I’m currently doing a combo of buying stuff on Bandcamp (lots of stuff is also free to stream in Bandcamp!), second hand CDs and ripping CDs from the library (older artists that don’t need the money like new releases do). For me owning the music feels right atm, and as someone know is more of a listener of specific artists it works for me. If you really want a streaming service, I’ve been considering Soundcloud, which seems perhaps the lesser of evils. I know a lot of people also rate Tidal, but I’m not sure of the ethics behind it (as is always the case when anything gets massive). But they’d both be better options than Spotify! Good luck!
I had tidal for a while. The downsides that I remember are that it's kind of glitchy and slower to load--I had buffering issues that I never had with spotify or apple music. It also has weak playlists... I avoid the official platform playlists (or the auto-suggest algorithm stuff) of any streaming service bc I don't like the thought that artists on certain labels the platform has deals with get pushed more, while other artists get censored... anyways... I like user-made playlists way more and tidal doesn't have much of that iirc. I didn't notice the sound quality actually being much better either.
For transfering playlists i use a paid app called playlisty. i was annoyed to have to pay for it but it was like $2 one time payment and it does the job perfectly (no playlist size limits) and i use it all the time so imo it's worth it.
Have you heard of soulseek? It's a great free app for downloading music. You could forego streaming and just have a huge mp3 collection :3 like back in the day... *wisful gaze*
I hear the youtube music catalogue has the most breadth, personally if i didn't get apple music for free atm i would probably try that but never actually used it so i can't rec it.
apple is far from a perfect company, but they not trying to get AI artists to cannibalise their platform for algorithm experiments or openly investing in AI war drones! plus it's more set up for album listening and handles local files much better if in the apple ecosystem
wish they had a fairer model for paying artists but it's still better than spotify's and the UI is a lot less ugly if a bit less intuitive
its been a week since i’ve been on this app and i’m having so much fun using it. I just love how wholesome cute and friendly everyone is here such a nice atmosphere <3 <3
