One of the most underrated areas of Brooklyn. Not as yuppie as Williamsburg proper, and not as dirtbag as Bushwick. There's definitely a lack of good restaurants and bars but it makes up for it in space, accessibility, and quiet. Specific recs are The Anchored Inn, Win Son, and Cooper Park.

Tearing up right now instead of working. I moved to the city as the last of Williamsburg's artistic energy was spent, and I moved to the edge of the neighborhood after it was already hollowed out. God bless the few places that are still interesting: Spectacle, Union Pool, Ore Bar, Blue Sun, Miriam Gallery, The P.I.T., Baby's, etc. Are there places in NYC with a real artistic scene now, or did our new way of living end that possibility? Please don't say Hudson, there's no way I can learn to make furniture.

No, not the name of some bar or shop. Just a feeling. Sometimes I go to Ridgewood or Bushwick to meet up with friends who live out there as an excuse to clear my head and try something different from the downtown morass. Of course this is just a different mess. But seriously, do any of you go out to Bushwick? I know it gets a lot of flack, but it’s really a strange, ambient and lawless place. In the summer garbage cooks out on the sidewalk in front of newish gentrification hives; empty lots full of tall grass and careening vines; the train rumbles above head on Myrtle, unmoved. Can’t tell if people are going to be dangerous or not; if trust-funded or not. Like some bizarro Hopper painting.

Manyyyy good recs have been made already, but here are a few that I feel strongly about: Coffee: -SEY Coffee is the best in the city by far. Incredible pour overs and espresso. I used to go there every day when I lived in Bushwick. -For a true old school cup, Porto Rico is great. The one on Bleecker has been there since 1958 and is great. No place to sit inside however. Pool: -Amsterdam Billards is the stand-by billiard hall! a little pricey but I like it Dayspa: - (Cheap) Wall Street Bath & Spa - (Not-Cheap) Bathhouse in Williamsburg Parks + Cemeteries (besides the glorious Central Park): -Madison Square Park is great for a classic NY-feel. Go to S&P Lunch for sandwiches and eat in the park on a nicer day. -In Brooklyn both McCarren Park and McGolrick Park are great - Ray's and Twins Lounge are nearby for drinks as well. -Green-wood Cemetery is sprawling and scenic. -Avoid Maria Hernandez Park at all costs.

My mom taught me this in order to slow down the nervous system. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4. If you're an anxious person you probably already know this. Also a good way to fall asleep really fast.
🍺
Aperol Spritz but throw away the champagne and replace it with the champagne of beers. Best enjoyed at a sidewalk cafe or in the park. Drink 2-3 for best results.

A rare experience in the city. House parties have a charm and intimacy that just can’t be matched by a bar. Everyone’s forced to physically brush up against each other and talk to people they might not otherwise. A good house party is sexy in this way. Anyone who attended my last halloween party knows this well.
