Ever since I started using discord I have have noticed I spend less time on soul sucking apps like instagram. I have real conversations and feel connected to people in a much healthier way than looking at superficial content that makes me depressed. Made the recent decision to stop doom scrolling and find some cool websites. Overall, I can say the atmosphere is much more calming and the actual engagement needed creates a larger level of fulfillment than just watching a video.

If you need a platform that isn't addictive and DOESN'T feel like a cesspool, I suggest Bluesky (bsky.app). It's like what Twitter used to be, except it's not algorithmic based-- You have MUCH more control over the people and topics that show up in your feed. there's also "starter packs" that basically let you mass-follow topics or related users you're interested in. It's a breath of fresh air tbh and a lot less of an echo chamber

Nonsensical ramble: It has been over a year since I’ve last had social media on my phone (not counting apps used solely for messaging, ie, discord, messenger, etc), and I can feel the difference. the only time i use social media is when I’m on my laptop and its usually no longer than 30 minutes a day as an unwind (even then, it’s only Pi.fyi because i refuse to go on social media that allows for doom scrolling). I feel the difference. My mind feels so much more clear, my memory has sharpened, and, oddly enough, I’m not as quick to get angry and i’m less irritable. I’ve never realised that it was an addiction. In the few times i have found myself in a trap of doomscrolling on instagram on the occasions that I needed to message someone on that platform and actively needed to sign into my account, i feel horrible after. like my focus had weened and i get grumpy and agitated more easily. It genuinely feels like a relapse. I promise you, cold turkey it and it will be for the better. I am not saying get rid of it, but you will find time in your days again. I’m more creative, I’m reading more, I’m absorbing more information that what I did while i was an avid social media user, and i have time for new hobbies. I’m not being dramatic, i’m being 100% serious.

Grab some paper or cardboard use whatever you have and just make something. Draw, collage, sculpture, video, whatever. Don’t take it too seriously. See how you feel afterwards.

I spend all day in the office, and since i live in the same building as my office i spend all day inside. I love being in there because I can literally control who i see and who i don’t, but occasionally i get cabin fever and need to go outside. I usually take my bike out. A bicycle is the life hack of NYC. If you don’t have one get a citi bike. ride around the city, put on some headphones. Most relaxing way to get some air and see the city. Late afternoons are the best.

"I beg you, to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer."-Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
