There is pretty much no joy working a 9-5 office job. So I take anything I can grab: post its, sharpies, label makers, highlighters, manila envelopes, endless paper clips and don’t even get me started on legal pads. I take it all home and tell my self I’ll use it for art making but don’t because I’m always exhausted from working so much. For professionally frustrated stationary lovers. A sweet thrill.

An umbrella that got me through many a stormy day in my rainy college town. A book set in 1870s Yucatan, reminding me of the history of the places I visited in April when I was ignorant of Mexico's past. A notebook full of Substack drafts that might never turn into essays. A notepad I use to keep track of my tasks at the office, ans topics to research when the work is done but the day isn't. A keycard to an office building full of finance bros, where my humanities background sticks out like a sore thumb. A single bandaid for the inevitable papercuts that come your way when you write all your first drafts on paper. A pen I stole from my previous job as a small compensation for every time I was undeservedly yelled at. A stack of train tickets from 2007 that I found at the bottom of a pile of forgotten files that I couldn't just throw away. All thrown together in a tote bag from a Laotian charity that provides prosthetics to victims of the cluster bombs that still go off 50 years after the US dropped them.

I, like many in the circumferent embrace of Middle America, have a desk job. If you don’t have one of these, fret not, you can simulate this activity at home during leisure hours by calling your favorite insurance company (mine is Aetna). Your job supplies you with pens. The quality of these pens is variable, but spend some time hunting down the pen with the firmest grip and loosest ink. This is to preference. Once you have your ideal pen, locate its common associate the sticky note. The color doesn’t matter much but I prefer a high contrast color like yellow or pink. Now get put on hold and go wild. The pen is your sword. The five pointed star, daisy, human eye, and squiggle maze are your manifesto. Poetry can’t hope to express the yawning sublimity of blank mental landscapes that the 9-5 provides with the same clarity of the sticky note. I recommend learning it’s joy.

just to doodle and write mindless notes that won't make any sense to you once you return to them eventually! don't forget to rip out sheets that you've grown weirdly attached to every once in a while so you don't have to have a huge stack of already used pages resting atop it... i am sadly on my last page of the muji memo pad i've had for probably years now... it will be dearly missed </3

Nothing annoys me more about the American culture than the lack of enthusiasm. If I invite you to go somewhere and your answer is ā€œsureā€ or ā€œwhy notā€, I’m taking it back. I do not wanna be surrounded by indifferent people. It’s unworthy.

When I was a kid, I had a homework assignment that asked me what my biggest dream was, and I wrote, 'to spend a whole day on the internet.' That didn’t age well for obvious reasons, but here, that feeling was rekindled. In that spirit, here’s my favorite picture of pre teen me, chasing for enlightenment online…. she would’ve loved pi.fyi
