Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll[2][3][4] and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles with stripped-down instrumentation. Lyricism in punk typically revolves around anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian themes. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produce recordings and distribute them through independent labels.
both punk and pop music have a sense of simple immediacy as their core tenets, and i don’t know if there’s a better example than the ramones of a band embracing that tenet from both ends of the spectrum. this is music for people who turn up their noses at the idea of delayed gratification. the ramones are a band for the glue-sniffing, soda jerking juvenile delinquent inside us all. i don’t think anything else has ever sounded this fun.
This past Saturday, my friend Seamus drove me back to Philly so we could go to a punk rock show together. I put this on to follow Sum 41 "Chuck" and well...it fucking hit. I don't endorse Tim Armstrong as a person but this album is full of heaters. I love how many times he says "Puerto Ricans". Recommend this song if you wanna have an awesome time with your friends.
