that was insanely masterful.
Is no one talking about it cause we’re all still thinking about it? Am I completely deluded about the audience / cultural awareness or impact this had?
Feeling a bit insane Lol.
oyyoyyoy tysm for sharing this here! the judaism references go largely over my head being from a deeply catholic/ latin background its still so foreign to me so this is actually so amazing to digest ! 🤯 great gateway/ kinda craving to read more about these underlying frameworks 👩💻
!!!!!!! i also have not stopped thinking about it since finishing it with flukemagnet the other day.
okay here it is:
in the last episode, they are leaning HEAVY into judaism, specifically the practices around the birth of a child.
first, it is considered bad luck/cursed to over prepare before a child is born, ranging from not accepting gifts to not setting up a nursery or even buying a crib prior to giving birth. which is why whit and asher didn't take the dream catcher.
second, traditionally parents are not supposed to name their children after anyone who is still alive. the supersition is that the soul of the person they are named after will get confused with two earth bound bodies present at the same time. though we don't know what the baby's name is, we do know it's a boy. the scene that really drove the theory home for me though was when asher is singing in hebrew while shining a light on whit's belly, then says "there's a little me inside of you."
both hollow people, whit and asher use each other to craft the future and perception they want. the final piece of that is asher giving whit a baby. she didn't need him anymore once the baby was born, but the baby is an extension of him / his soul, so they couldn't exist on earth at the same time.
IDK! feels like a vehicle to get asher out of the picture while still allowing the show to be as absurd as it is.
Cause the guy from the sopranos who is in it is like when the sopranos first becomes surrealist at all it’s about that guy so it’s like when we first realize something in the show is not real and I was thinking about that in terms of if we think this really happened or Asher is like dead or dreaming or whatever
I have been obsessed with this show since it went live. Watching all the panels with Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder. Reading theories on the subreddit. Haven't been that intellectually entertained by a show since a long long time.
concert? play? Reading? niche movie screening? Rave? Restaurant you want to try? whatever it is, try to wrangle friends if its up their alley (not a pro-antisocial message here) but if it does not work out, take urself! literally worst case scenario absolutely no one gives a fuck best case you make new circumstantial friends. Every one is busy making money and chasing what inspires them to stay here so schedules align once in a blue moon, don’t let that stop you from discovering / enjoying shit.
