90s robert altman entertainment biz satire/thriller - v good viewing after last year’s writer‘s strike. tim robbins plays a hollywood exec who’s receiving death threats from disgruntled screenwriters. great snapshot of LA in this era (tho altman gets LA right in every movie he does) and endless massive cameos. one of my fav little details is the background conversations, they have nothing to do with the plot - they just add to the ambience and enhance getting immersed in the show biz deal schmooze-control zone.

After Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly was given 20 million to make "Southland Tales". A film that got booed out of Cannes film festival, grossed only 300,000 worldwide box office, and practically killed the man's film career (before the very recent news of his return). After finally getting around to watching it, I simply cannot understand how anyone didn't enjoy the hell out of this movie. It has aged beautifully, the cast is fucking loaded and all over the place (The Rock, Stifler, Wallace Shawn, Justin Timberlake, Amy Poehler + many more), and in a very silly/fun way satirizes post 9/11 hysteria and political dispersion/stupidity in america without being very preachy. Yes it's sporadic, but there's so many quotables and memorable scenes that are hilarious and just batshit fucking insane Hollywood truly needs to return to giving money to psychos and letting them run wild with their vision. it creates a truly unique film experience such as this one that I could not recommend more.

funny documentary about a working class midwestern guy just trying to get his film made. feels like a mockumentary but it’s real. bittersweet with a looming sadness, but if anything it’s hopeful. definitely inspired napoleon dynamite and hot rod one of my new favorites methinks…

I feel like I will go crazy if I don’t tell someone about this movie, it absolutely rips. we love media on medium. it’s a group of actors in a musical, constantly moving between their dream theatre production and the production they actually can afford. maybe I just like this because I work in a theatre again and am constantly daydreaming about us having enough money to turn the heaters on. xoxo love this flick 👍
