Physical letters aren't just for corny love notes and eviction notices! They can be a really good way of communicating things that are too long for texting but too personal to say aloud. I feel like the convenience of texting can be deceptively dishonest, it’s often more genuine to let something bleed out on a page. It also just feels cool as fuck to write one, I like to imagine I’m some aristocrat main character in a period piece. Maybe light a candle if you want to be extra pretentious.

writing physical letters to your friends or lovers is SUCH a slay,,,,, you can draw on them, glue shit on them, put stickers on them, whatever you want. I received a letter recently and it was the best thing that happened to me all week, I read it over and over and pinned it to my bedroom wall. Can’t do that with a text, at least I can’t because I don’t have a printer…

This one is kind of a ā€œno shitā€ because people have sent letters for like centuries but I think right now at least in America it’s seen as a novelty. it’s so hard to take true time to myself - time that isn’t work or browsing Reddit or fucking around on iPhone or playing video games but time to sitting down to hand write a letter to a dear loved one makes me consider what is true and what is rotten in my life. The ā€œformā€œ of letter with like a start middle and end and meandering along the way is hard to express in other forms. Like are you gonna text your mom all that shit?

In a digital world it has become a rare treat to see your own handwriting, not to mention the handwriting of your friends and family. Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve seen it, maybe not. Think about new friends you’ve made and whether or not you know that about them- what their handwriting looks like. I feel like anxiety might be on the rise because so many people are in their heads while they’re on their phones. Handwriting (also journaling by hand) helps you slow down and get back into your body and in touch with the tactile tangible world around us. If you don’t particularly enjoy your handwriting, you could try to take it slow and practice. ā€œProgress, not perfectionā€œ. You could get some sweet stationery and write a cute little note to yourself or someone else. If you love to text and want to get the point across immediately- I recommend writing a little note, taking a photo of it, and then texting it to someone. You could ask them if they want to send a note back to you in their handwriting, and then instead of bubbles with the same fonts you’re sending each other photos of instant unique handwritten notes.

I’m taking a class on this mf. I know he’s probably talked about way too much but he is such a fascinating combo of being deeply introspective and then wildly funny. The way he writes about sleep and memory and longing is real as fuck. I’ll probably be sick of him by the end of this semester because it’s thousands of pages of reading but for now I am in love.

I was terribly allergic to Cronenberg until I saw Dead Ringers and now I’m giving his movies a chance. While he’s famous for body horror I think his best stuff is actually his movies that aren’t in that genre. This is probably my favorite mafia movie and features the absolute most badass fight scene.

Collage of documentary outtakes by Kirsten Johnson. Incredibly subtle and tender, still haunts me a year after watching.
