In a digital world it has become a rare treat to see your own handwriting, not to mention the handwriting of your friends and family. Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve seen it, maybe not. Think about new friends you’ve made and whether or not you know that about them- what their handwriting looks like. I feel like anxiety might be on the rise because so many people are in their heads while they’re on their phones. Handwriting (also journaling by hand) helps you slow down and get back into your body and in touch with the tactile tangible world around us. If you don’t particularly enjoy your handwriting, you could try to take it slow and practice. “Progress, not perfection“. You could get some sweet stationery and write a cute little note to yourself or someone else. If you love to text and want to get the point across immediately- I recommend writing a little note, taking a photo of it, and then texting it to someone. You could ask them if they want to send a note back to you in their handwriting, and then instead of bubbles with the same fonts you’re sending each other photos of instant unique handwritten notes.

I know a big reason that deleting social media is scary is the risk of losing touch with friends who you don’t see IRL very often but this is a perfect reason to begin a written correspondence!!! writing a letter and mailing it every week or two is often even better to foster connection than sending memes or reels or story likes every day. the next logical question is “what do I write about” but honestly when you’re writing a handwritten letter to someone who lives far away, it’s very easy to get into a sort of flow state and just describe your day, talk about whats new, things that have reminded you of them, and ask plenty of questions. this is a huge advantage of this more longform correspondence, because unlike a DM or text, its inevitable that you’ll give your partner plenty of things to talk about or respond to. its also just so much fun to decorate a letter or decide what to include or what sort of stationery this person would find pretty. you can mail little things like coins or other small ephemera that has a little meaning or a lot of meaning. words in handwriting are always more intimate and it’s honestly just so much fun to have a penpal. really you’re only limited by your own imagination. reach out to the people you want to keep in touch with before you delete your socials, and just ask if they’d like to keep in touch by mail and ask for their address!! I wouldn’t be surprised if writing back and forth brings you even closer as friends than if you’d kept social media.

Physical letters aren't just for corny love notes and eviction notices! They can be a really good way of communicating things that are too long for texting but too personal to say aloud. I feel like the convenience of texting can be deceptively dishonest, it’s often more genuine to let something bleed out on a page. It also just feels cool as fuck to write one, I like to imagine I’m some aristocrat main character in a period piece. Maybe light a candle if you want to be extra pretentious.

This one is kind of a “no shit” because people have sent letters for like centuries but I think right now at least in America it’s seen as a novelty. it’s so hard to take true time to myself - time that isn’t work or browsing Reddit or fucking around on iPhone or playing video games but time to sitting down to hand write a letter to a dear loved one makes me consider what is true and what is rotten in my life. The “form“ of letter with like a start middle and end and meandering along the way is hard to express in other forms. Like are you gonna text your mom all that shit?

The other night I fell asleep on the couch around 10:00 pm watching Joseph Campbell’s Mythos I. I woke up around 4:30 am, washed my face and brushed my teeth. This invigorated me to the point that I basically wasn’t falling back asleep, so I ended up looking up different brands of finishing salts for two hours in bed. Fleur De Sel and Maldon Sea Salts are not salts that you want to cook with, but that you want to sprinkle atop things as “finishing salts”. In my research I discovered that Guérande or Camargue fleur de sels are top brands to use. And with Maldon, the brand just called Maldon. I have Maldon sea salts and also Sal de Ibiza fleur de sel which is really good. It comes in a ceramic pot with a little spoon. I recommend both and you don’t need a lot, a little goes a long way. From Wikipedia: “Fleur de sel ("flower of salt" in French; French pronunciation: [flœʁ də sɛl]) or flor de sal (also "flower of salt" in Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan) is a salt that forms as a thin, delicate crust on the surface of seawater as it evaporates. Fleur de sel has been collected since ancient times (it was mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his book Natural History), and was traditionally used as a purgative and salve. It is now used as a finishing salt to flavor and garnish food.” From Maldon Salt website: “What is special about Maldon Salt? Maldon Salt’s irregular and distinctive pyramid shape is what makes it so special. In addition to the unique tactile texture, our pyramid salt flakes release saltiness with sweet precision, bringing a clean and delicate flavour.” Some uses: Vegetables. Pastas. Meats if you do that. Watermelon or mango. A chocolate chip cookie, fresh from the oven, topped with Maldon sea salt. I linked Alison Roman‘s recipe above for Salted Butter and Chocolate Chunk Shortbread Cookies above. Warning: these cookies may horn you for life, and cause you to eat many. If you give them to people they’ll keep asking you to make them over and over again. Perfect trifecta of sweet but not too sweet, savory, and salty. A little toast with mashed avocado, sliced tomate, Maldon sea salt or fleur de sel on top. Can also serve with scrambled egg on the side with some Green Pepper Cholula on top (green flame emoji). A warm blueberry muffin, or toasted croissant (I pronounce this with an audible ‘r’) cut in half, some vegan (Miyoko’s, Earth Balance Soy Free) or whatever other (Kerrygold) butter melted in the middle, and a little fleur de sel or Maldon sea salt. Do you use finishing salts? What do you use them on? How do you love them? I try to watch my sodium but I’m a little bit of a salt guy in moderation. Don’t call me ”salt bae”. I’m only bae to one woman and one woman only, and that’s my wife, the most beautiful woman in the world.

It’s nice to let the afternoon sun come in while you relax in a soothing salt bath, maybe some essential oils, a lil masque. A little diffuse sunlight makes it nice.
