Really good article sharply analysing the world’s greatest cringe video – the “let me just say this” rap battle – and deconstructing the “void” at the centre of Australian culture. “In the process, he exemplifies something about the Australian character [Australian culture??], and its tendency toward making a bad copy of that which travels here from afar. If anthropophagy (cannibalising i.e. digesting imperial culture) is a way of asserting independence over imperial forces, then the secret power of Snipes’ flop is the complete mockery and destruction of American rap—asserting the dominance of Australian culture’s central void, which swallows Jay Z and the Yankee hat up whole. It is a shocking performance. It takes the presumed power of anthropophagic artmaking to an extreme.”

Lauren Oyler's "Ha Ha! Ha ha!"

Bring back hatchet jobs! But for like Substacks and blogs. Oyler's is fun, mainly skewering Tolentino herself (funny!) but I want to see people fighting in formal prose about pieces with subtitles like "summer blues, ex’s, home depot, loss, and cantaloupe,” and “falling in love with the stains in my microwave” — things like that. Toooo much uncritical reposting on Instagram stories and not enough "OKAY lazy metaphor ALERT." We need to be better writers. But also we should be cringy. We just need to be careful.

Do / go alone!

concert? play? Reading? niche movie screening? Rave? Restaurant you want to try? whatever it is, try to wrangle friends if its up their alley (not a pro-antisocial message here) but if it does not work out, take urself! literally worst case scenario absolutely no one gives a fuck best case you make new circumstantial friends. Every one is busy making money and chasing what inspires them to stay here so schedules align once in a blue moon, don’t let that stop you from discovering / enjoying shit.
