keep, but never read, your old journals

when i finish a journal I label it with a fat tip metallic gold sharpie with the date of the journal’s first and last entry. Then i put it with my other similarly-labeled finished journals on my bookshelf and never read at them again Unless absolutely necessary. Ideally nobody will ever lay eyes on it until my kids/grandkids do after i’m dead and going through my stuff and they read it and think wow grandpa was really fucked up for a long time

Keep and sometimes read your journals

I keep all my journals in a big plastic box under my bed. The Artist’s Way instructs you to read your journals at the end of the course, and it was the first time I’d really done that and now I love occasionally going back a few months or so! You can see patterns, find old ideas or good bits of writing to use somewhere else. At the end of 2023 I read through my entire years worth of journals and did “A Year in Diary Excerpts” on my substack, it was amazing to see the progression throughout the year, and it may as well be an advert for ADHD medication the way it shows how much better it made me!

journaling

i love my journals. especially now because everything is online it is a great chance to hold something real and write! i keep two- one for photos (a junk journal/scarpbook) and one for just my handwriting. it’s not a diary, there are a lot of personal entries tho. it’s more of a book for my daily thoughts and experience. whatever i need to write down! i study french in there, memorize lines, make to do lists, and doodle too! it takes the stress of the book away and lets me to really use it since there’s no limits! it’s also a great place to keep my stickers and postcards…all the stuff you want to keep and don’t know what to do with!

Cook for your friends

And don't pose it like the cooking is a question, pose it like you're obviously going to cook and all they need do is tell you what they're in the mood for. Just be like "hey I'm cooking dinner for you, do you want soup or lasagna?" And include lots of healthy stuff cause you know people aren't out here eating as healthy as they should.

Bird watching

This is literally reversing so much damage caused by social media and screen addiction. And you can bird in groups so it's just a bunch of nerds (said lovingly) not using their phones just walking around in the woods and pointing out cute birds. This hobby is amazing

Calling all hangouts dates

Like I don't ask friends if they wanna chill or grab a drink. I ask if they wanna go on a date. Everything's a date if it's you and other people. Doesn't matter how many people are invited they're dates to me. The more dates the merrier I'm just a little love demon trying to siphon as much love as I can sink my little teeth into
