Some of his songs are so atonal and chaotic you kind of have to just give up and experience it. First listen, I remember hearing a wall of autotune, blown-out 808s & distorted hi-hats until a clear-as-day 2011 Chief Keef reference emerged like the sun breaking through storm clouds. Some of his music sounds like he’s pulling from every microgenre of rap from 2007 until now, at once. It’s so overwhelming it’s palette cleansing. I listen to his music the same way perfume shops keep a cup of coffee beans.

my younger brother is obsessed with him and for the longest time it was all that he listened to and I didn’t get it. to be fair his early stuff can be a bit rough, but he’s only improved as an artist over the years. his lyrics are also increasingly comprehendible which helps. I took my brother to a concert of his a while back and the energy was insane. now I can appreciate how hype his music is and its uniqueness in the rap world, def the best of the rage type stuff that’s big right now. linked my fav song of his rn, I think it’s the best example of his new era with less repetitive production, actual hooks and structure, and decent lyrics

If you’ve never listened to Aesop Rock, it’ll most likely sound like harsh noise to you the first few listens, but boy does his music reward you the more you listen. This isn’t background music, listening is WORK- rewarding work. Once your ear gets used to it you’re in for a treat. “Black Snow” is my current favorite on this album. I recommend patiently making your way through all his work if you’re a rap/poetry/word fan… you will get stuck on specific songs for a while since there is SO much being said in every.single.word. Best lyricist of our generation and I don’t think anyone disputes that. And an added bonus- his vast vocabulary will make you smarter as you listen🤓

♥️
I imagine you know him well, but if not his first two albums are pretty classic r&b while his 2014 is more experimental. I remember when he surprised dropped that album- I was heavily into him and was so blown away by his sound.

I’m very anti-free-will-pilled rn. This new book Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will, argues all the baseline variables that precede action (our past, our current mood, our biology, our culture, etc) have an inescapable effect on our choices. To me, this is isn’t hopeless–it’s humanist! The alchemy of what motivates us is crazy! There is a traceable, individually justified reason for why we all do what we do. It’s helped me approach myself and others with openness and curiosity, instead of judgment. Like, think about the confluence of influences that drives one to goon. The world is magical place.

Natalie and Charlie can excavate the funny yet human truth out of literally anything. For a lack of better words: Seinfeldian. I’ve done the pod (twice!) and did their live show at the Bellhouse not too long ago. Had a blast. They’re both very smart & very silly people, and the audience they’ve cultivated reflects that.

I’m weaning myself off the immediate gratification that comes with sharing thoughts online the moment I have them, but I still find it hard to shut the fuck up. Journaling satisfies my urge to never shut the fuck up and also is supposed to be good for you or whatever. I love the Pigma Micron .005 Pen. These pens are so fine point it's borderline erotic. So scratchy and satisfying. I look at my entries like fuck that's not even handwriting, that's calligraphy. Uniball Jetstream Stick Pen 1.0mm is when I am in the thick of it and I need to get the ideas off QUICK. Smooth and glide-y and wet feeling.
