Also was rated one of the top 5 new restaurants in the US last year $$$$ 🌻Gypsy Kitchen, 14th St: really good small shareable plates, nice rooftop/outdoor seating esp. during sunset, good drinks  $$$ ✨Dlena, mt Vernon: amazing margs (10/10) and food. Good outdoor seating and inside is fun.  $$ 🌍Maydan, FL Ave: so good. Went with banana Dans $$$ 🌵Vera, Ivy City (Mexican/Mediterranean fusion): SO good. Def upscale, went for kittys bday. Food was bomb and was served the largest gin drink in the world. If you go late enough, it turns into a full service bar upstairs and a separate club/bar downstairs $$$$ 🥀El Secreto de Rosita, U Street: cute inside with nice booths/ambiance (good for a date), burratta flatbread was bomb, brunch on the weekends and a good happy hour, waitress told me their turning the extension next door into a fine dining section soon  $$ 👯‍♀️Jane Jane (14th street): great drinks and a cozy environment. Fills up fast, especially at night, and doesn’t take reservations but you can put your name on a waiting list. Right on 14th so you can hit Aslin or somewhere else while you wait.  🫒Green Zone (AdMo): one of my favorite bars in the city. Has awesome middle eastern music and small plates but fills up very fast. Indoor & outdoor seating, doesn’t take reservations so expect to stand somewhere upstairs unless you go early for a table.  💕Thip Khao (14th st): delicious Laotian food and really good portions. fair prices too

Oh, the lure of San Francisco… I always dreamed I would end up living there as an adult because my parents lived there when they were young and hot in the 90s. I visited a lot growing up and was always enchanted. Ended up going to Berkeley for school and by then the vibe in SF… was already off. Expensive and full of tech bros wearing backpacks at bars and increasingly soulless. The housing crisis is devastating and visible on every street you walk down. I went last October for work and it felt so haunted. But if you must… 🖤 Scoma’s (fancy lunch in fisherman’s wharf, get the Crab Louie and a martini) 🖤 Tommy’s Joynt (no fuss meat sandwiches & cheap cocktails) 🖤 Vesuvio (perfect bar, iSpy vibes in terms of decor) 🖤 Tommasso’s (best italian. Get the chilled broccoli and some sort of pizza with arugula on it) 🖤 Swensen’s (my favorite ice cream in the world. I miss it and dream of it. Get sticky chewy chocolate or banana) 🖤 House of Nanking (go when you’re starving for Hot Food! you may have to wait a little but it won’t be that long. Get the green beans and if they have congee, by god get that. Also ask for chili oil) 🖤 The East Bay!! (Go to Berkeley and Oakland. They’re better lol)

apparel-ish? I started an apparel brand called Blood is the new Black when I was 23 (in 2004, i’m 42 now) the brand acted as an arts collective, i’d select several artists every season to add to the brand and would curate their submitted works into collections. distro ranged from beams (jp) colette (fr) selfridges (uk) all the way to pac sun, urban outfitters, zumiez in the states. during the 9 years I had the brand I also published zines, produced artist directed films, curated gallery shows etc. it was part of the indie sleaze era and you’d see folks like tegan and sara, michael pitt, britney spears, allison mosshart wearing the brand. somehow I pivoted to country music along the way and started a brand called midnight rider in 2013. i made licensed repop and vintage feeling tees for musicians and folks like willie nelson, townes van zandt, nudies rodeo tailors, john wayne, the judds, waylon jennings, zz top and so many others. I sold that brand last year! now I do licensing and merchandise for waylon jennings (so if you see waylon merch or collabs i’m the one behind it). I also spend my free time taking photos and i’m currently working on a book about grand national owners. id love to mentor folks who have or are starting their own businesses because i’ve learned a lot in the process both good and bad.
