for years i tried to find relief until i just couldnât take it anymore and went to the gyno looking for answers. they put me on a birth control patch that i change once a week with one week having no patch (and then comes the period that week) and itâs like night and day. my periodâs a little longer but the pain is almost completely gone and my PMS symptoms are almost nonexistent. iâm so happy with it so i definitely recommend!!
I was on the pill from age 16-23 and when I came off it I was like suddenly not suicidal and my mental health began to get a lot better slowly but surely. For some people hormonal contraceptives are brilliant and do their job (and extra jobs like skin, regulating periods etc) perfectly. but if you went on it at a young age when your hormones are already not fully levelled out then Iâd suggest stopping and seeing what it feels like without it. You can always go back on if want to later! Iâll never go back on hormonal contraception because I donât want to risk going back, but for some people the opposite is true and it helps them feel more level! (Also warning my periods hurt more after coming off and I have suspected PMDD so thereâs a danger zone every month, so be prepared for shit like that, but Iâll take a couple days of crazy a month over feeling like a suicidal zombie every day for years lol).
science and medicine has progressed enough to the point where women can opt to stop having periods. iâve had two hormonal IUDs over the course of 8 years now, and therefore havenât had a period in 8 years. no cramps. no heating pads. no cravings. no tampons. nothing. every womens body is different and i canât promise everyone will have the same experience ive had with my IUDs. but if your periods suck like mine did, it canât hurt to ask a doctor ab going on some sort of HRT/birth control. why are we still letting our uteruses dictate and manage our lives for one week out of every month? (for some, like myself at one point, well over just one week) not having a period is great! itâs freeing!!!!! i feel as if i can put my personhood and identity first, and not sacrifice any sort of happiness or autonomy to my uterus!
For your skin, you can take spironolactoneâ itâs a much lower dose estrogen, so it wonât have as many symptoms (at least in my experience). But also, your menstrual cycle, and your skin, will have changed over the past five yearsâ if you want to go off birth control, you may find being off it feels better on your body. I went off birth control 3 years ago, and my periods are more regulated now, and my body feels better. Some practical tips:
Keep a journal/track your cycle as you go off it, and remember it will take a few months for your body to regulate its own cycles again.
Be generous with yourselfâ you and your body are on the same team, and if you get crampy or cranky or period anxious, thatâs your body communicating with you.
For the first few cycles, really plan your week around your period: I use my period as a week of rest, and now I look forward to it. I skip exercise classes, I eat iron rich foods, I go to bed early and I hang out with my girlfriends.
Think of your period as your body âwinteringâ; a season of rest and dormancy so that youâre reenergised for the rest of your cycle.
If you notice a change in your skin, you can start by using clindamycin topicallyâ itâs a low dose antibiotic, and it will help stop breakouts from spreading. You can also try a retinol and a good moisturise.
itâs the very least we can do. one of the few things america has gotten right is allowing us to protest the government and thatâs exactly what we should be doing right now. there are multiple ways of protesting including going to marches, boycotting, addressing your representatives directly, and voting âuncommittedâ in the upcoming primaries to communicate to the democratic party that they are not acting in the peopleâs interests and that we will not support biden if he continues to fund this occupation and the deaths of tens of thousands of people. please do your part because youâd want people to do the same if it was you in this situation. iâve linked a list of upcoming protests around the world. please use it. <3
