helpmeet by naben ruthnum is a tight little body horror-ish novella, the icarus girl by helen oyeyemi for more magical-realism type horror, i love everything by john darnielle who kind of runs the horror-adjacent gamut but universal harvester is probably the most traditionally "horror"

The Doll-Maker and Other Tales of Horror, Black Dahlia and White Rose: Stories, The Corn Maiden and Other Nightmares. But my favorite which I’ve rec-ed before is Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque the titular story Haunted is so sick and twisted and I cry tears of fear every time I go back to read it (which I have multiple times). She has the most viscerally disturbing and discomfiting style and a unique ability to crawl under your skin, more so than any other horror author I’ve read and horror is not even typically her primary genre!!

i loved this book, it’s so bizarre. boy parts by eliza clark, swamplandia! by karen russell, outlawed by anna north, and any comics by julia gfrörer. some of those maybe not so nasty, per se, but definitely interesting and strange portrayals of girlhood/young womanhood. also seconding anything gillian flynn, joyce carol oates, or shirley jackson.

you don't even have to be a murakami fan for this one. such a poignant, quiet, overpoweringly beautiful movie that i think about often.
