i loved loved lovedd "the candy house" by jennifer egan
"several people are typing" by calvin kasulke
i always rec "out" by natsuo kirino for horror/crime and "earthlings" by sayaka murata if u want to get seriously grossed out
Some horror-y, some thriller-y, some ive rec’d elsewhere on here:
-the wasp factory, iain banks (!!)
-fever dream, Samanta schweblin (!!)
-I’m thinking of ending things, Iain reed
-out, natsuo kirino
-the faces, tove ditlevsen
-Eileen, otessa moshfegh
-we have always lived in the castle, Shirley jackson None are too gory but i did find out and the wasp factory to be more disturbing personally.
theyre manga so not traditional novels, but I read through both Tomie and Uzumaki by junji ito a couple years back, and they’re deliciously creepy, scary, a little gross.
240 pages. ⚠️⚠️⚠️FAIR WARNIGNG it is so gross like read the warnings. Theres assault, abuse, incest, etc. She also wrote convenience store woman but it couldn't be more different (also incredible book I recommend). It blurs the line between whats real and whats imagination, and it REALLY pushes morals and societal norms. Its so gross but oh my god I cant stop reading. Its like a car crash 10/10 one of my favorite books ever
and it’s just as good as they say. incredibly resonant dystopian horror. i’d also recommend The Salt Grows Heavy for a quick read. medieval fantasy body horror but there is also a sweet sort of love story
