There are folks that I met on tumblr as a teenager
With whom I'm still in contact today.
These are people that I've never met face to face,
But whose secrets I know, whose angsts I know.
People I have grown into adulthood with.
People who have surprised me,
People who have met my expectations,
People who are working, or aren't,
People who now have kids, or don't.
People who I am tied to by ethereal internet threads that have remained unsevered for over a decade. Every once in a while we message each other,
And it feels like catching up with an old friend.
The modes of our communication,
Remain the same.
there’s nothing better than corresponding w niche person from peru etc you met like 5 years ago on twitter. kinda feels like a digital version of that ethan hawke / julie delpey american-french romance film. honestly, some of my longest relationships
someone i used to know a decade ago just overdosed this morning. our last convo was way back in 2017. we shared a love of film cameras and would endlessly nerd out over gear. I scrolled through our old messages, wishing that i'd done more keep in touch.
it got me thinking about all of the people who'd impacted my life at some point, and how many of those friendships had faded away with the years. there was one friend in particular that came to mind. someone who was my best friend at one point. and out of the blue, he texted me to catch up.
Earlier this year my friend graduated medical school and I went to her party in Philly for it - we have been internet friends from tumblr since we were 16 and i was worried I would be the only one there from online. I got there and everyone was from online - they were all people she met on twitter or tumblr or discord. also my high school ex girlfriend just went to someone’s wedding that she had known from twitter…. people are still friends online and they still move from online to offline, which I think is very sweet
No reading feels better than reading done in avoidance.
Reading that happens in desperate spurts
fueled by the reality of obligations
that hinge on closed pages.
Reading to spite your boss
is richer than
reading that happens
when you should be asleep.
Playing Axel F’s “Crazy Frog” in delicate moments is a power move that should not be taken lightly.
