Oh man I could talk about Lucinda Williams for a while. Most I think were turned onto her from Car Wheels On A Gravel Road (an equally good if not superior record). That said… you want gut-wrenching? You want country croon that’ll tear on your six string heart? You got it with S.O.W. Favourites: Six Blocks Away, He Never Got Enough Love, Sweet Old World, Pineola, Sidewalks of the City.
Elephant - The White Stripes Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel Ants From Up There - Black Country, New Road Madison - Sloppy Jane I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One - Yo La Tengo Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith Almost all of these have tracks that get me into a crying mood. All are more meaningful to me than I’d like to admit. I’ll let you guess at the gory details there. Enjoy the tunes, friends.
Love is Overtaking Me, Arthur Russell
-an archival release, contains a lot of great folky tracks, still has elements of his electronic work Viva Last Blues, Palace Music (Will Oldham)
-great intro to Will Oldham, a great off kilter folk artist Red Apple Falls, Smog (Bill Callahan)
-Really solid album, very subtle and sparse but rewarding on relisten Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP, Joanna Newsom
-Beautiful EP with great folk accompaniment, even if you aren’t familiar with her music, i think this is a great starting point, the second track is very emotional for me
Admittedly, I could pick more… But some of my all-time faves are Costello Music by The Fratellis (I’m a sucker for pinups, the single covers are great too) and Blue by Joni Mitchell (it’s simple but evocative of the album as a whole)!
Annoyed about having to hold your empty alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage at a standing-room event? Tuck that sucker between your feet. If someone comes towards you, just angle them away from the empty can using a step forward with the hind leg. clap freely mes amis
