i remember being deeply obsessed with robots when i was 5/6 and i was like waiiitttt i could totally make robots… mainly cause i thought wait this is like toys but better…other transient profession ideas i had included working at the cash register (not just generally in a store but specifically that), hairdresser, “professional activist”, athlete (unspecified), a higher-up in an insurance company, screenwriter (included a detailed plan of moving to hollywood and establishing myself in the industry), theoretical physicist, perfume maker, and journalist. now im studying biomed 🫦. i only got interested in biology in 8th grade when we got a better teacher which just really goes to show how important good teachers are!!! i wanna get a phd in immunology or virology now 🤓
no way, i’m doing my year in employment annotating and functionally characterising viruses. and i‘m hoping it’ll help me decide on a masters or a phd even
hana_u im doing a microbiology module this semester and an immunology one as well actually but yeah learning about viruses has been really cool. love those little acellular freaks ❤️
When I was little, I was super interested in science! There was this one album for kids by the band They Might Be Giants that had songs about a bunch of different basic science concepts like photosynthesis, the periodic table, cells/DNA, etc and I listened to it on repeatttt
I also remember getting so excited about learning the butterfly life cycle in kindergarten and drawing out the whole diagram on our patio with chalk so I could explain it to my parents (who humored me because they thought it was cute)
As I grew up, I moved away from STEM because I was worried my brain wasn't built for it. It sounds ridiculous looking back, but I guess that's how imposter syndrome works haha. I also had a pretty bad generalized anxiety disorder that made it tough for me to make it through lab classes that involved precise steps and hazardous materials.
After I graduated highschool, I started anxiety meds and sort of re-evaluated what I wanted to spend my life doing.
Long story short, I'm studying biology now! I'm especially interested in informatics, data visualization, and scientific communication, which checks out with that little life cycle diagram story I guess haha
i used to want to spin the decks at parties so bad caused it seemed really fun and i can’t play any instruments or hold a note. i also wanted to be a president, a venture capitalist (read my dad’s copy of rich dad poor dad ijbol), a pilot, an architect and a judge. when i was applying for uni i seriously considered doing african studies cause it’s super interesting to me but i didn’t want any of the career prospects so i was also hoping to be a forever learner. unforch nowhere in the uk does it for undergrad and my parents would never in a million years have paid for me to study in america especially not for what i had in mind.
wear your shoes till the soles come off. you don’t need a new shirt. STOP mindlessly consuming things!!! enough!!! go sit outside for 10 minutes and think about if you are actually lacking anything material in your life (you’re probably not). if you do need new things have a thing-exchange with your friends it’s so fun! stop falling victim to overconsumption
