this one's perfect for when you're on vacation or like a night out. when someone tells you where they're from you have to answer "me too!" and then when specifics like school or hangouts or whatever comes up you always say you went there or you've been there. Then start throwing out names, asking if they know people. It's the bit that keeps on giving

it's a pretty smooth / easy conversation starter without being too serious and can be cheeky or cute depending on the delivery said it to a guy last week and he's like "i just saw you less than a week ago? are you implying that i've quit my corporate job since the last time we spoke"

asking this when meeting someone new, fun discovery process for both parties! instead of “so what do you do for work?” or for the collegiates: “what’s your major?” this question serves the choose-your-own-adventure purpose because not everyone is afforded/prefers a stable job or education. it also allows you to get to know someone better, maybe they’re going to tell you about the 200 plants they take care of, or the profound though they’ve been stuck on. or, maybe they will think you’re weird and just tell you what they do for work, which is fine too, because it also answers the question. plus, people get excited when you ask them this. it’s unconventional in those early stages, cool points awarded brethren.

I vividly remember for my 6th grade graduation we all had to stand up in front of the parents and say what we wanted to be when we grew up, and lil ol' me took that mic and said with my whole chest, "hedgefund manager". The way there was a moment of silence before the fathers stood and applauded me, I will never forget. Got a lot of handshakes after that one. Did I know what a hedgefund manager was? Not a chance. I was brainwashed by my father. Anyways, I'm a writer now.

my friends and i love a bit, so I was forced to approach a guy I thought was cute at the bar and buy him a drink. we got the bartender in on it (who turned out to be his friend, told me his fav drink and that he was single). We ended up chatting over paper planes for like an hour before I retreated back to my friends after we exchanged contact info. Alas nothing came of it, but either way, I've been riding the high of approaching a literal stranger in public since then and realized it wasn't as heinous an experience as I thought it would be.
