lately Iāve been confined to a big concrete city and an office job and I miss nature dearly. I donāt know when Iāll be able to touch grass again, so I started reading Annie Dillardās Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, sort of a nature-walking-diary, kinda mediocre but it does make you feel like youāre in the west virginia woods with her, which is all I wanted anyway
i have a tendency to hole up inside, but iāve been trying to go outside more when itās nice out. the woods is a magical place, and i went to check out a new trail by my house with a creek. outside is full of whimsy and you can pretend to be a fairy or something frolicking through the forest š§āāļø
being properly outdoorsy is a big time/lifestyle commitment and being completely alienated from nature is undignified (and probably bad for your health). knowing a bit more about your environs than the average joe and being moderately well-versed in āreading natureās signsā is a good and reasonable goal.
either going on a hike or just exploring and taking my time somewhere in nature. It helps me to get some perspective and reset. I prefer somewhere with a creek, I like looking at different rocks trying to find ones that have cool shapes/textures/colors. look for national/state forests or wildlife refuges near you!
for creative ruts, iāll do an excercise sometimes where I look for weird shadows or leaves or anything really and try and turn those shapes into characters or just see how my brain reinterprets them. itās a nice low stakes creative game
when you walk around try to pay attention to your surroundings and take notes of what you see on a specific notebook. For example yesterday I saw: a spider eating a bug, a tiny black and white bird on the sidewalk, a hawk flying, a yellow flower Iāve never seen before, a red poppy, a woman with bright cherry hair, and a shoe-shaped cloud. Itās good exercise for the writers out there
one of my favourite ways to spend time is going to poetry foundationās website and just clicking on anything - besides poetry, they have lots of resources and essays about poets or particular movements. I discovered so many great things doing this
