I recommend the book Rosario Tijeras by Jorge Franco. It's about a girl who gets raped in Medellín, Colombia in the 90's. As payback she cuts the balls of her rapist with scissors and grows up to be a hitwoman and a prostitute. It's a critique to Colombian society in the 90's due to the absurd amounts of violence. The book has everything. Action, a love triangle, a woman doomed by her circumstances. It reads like a movie, really.
an excellent novel — it explores the violence and exploitation and treachery within the carceral system, the slippery slope of complacency, queer love, prison abolition, and more. those descriptors may not be very alluring but the right people will still pick it up.
but I'll always recommend to mystery lovers. I couldn't put this book down, and would only take breaks to eat, drink water, and sleep. But let's just say that the ending made me hard switch to romance, anime, and k-dramas only for months... warning: contains dark, graphic themes and violence.
