Watched this documentary short on the Criterion Channel just now to get myself in the right mood for DC Pride parades. Simply amazing. You have to watch this one.
I couldnt decide so in no particular order •Bloodsisters (1995):Great documentary about the San Francisco leather dyke scene in the 90s, amazing look into personal dynamics, terminology, you also get to see the 93 Washington gay and lesbian march as well as the Ms. Leather pageant. Michell Handelman truly preserved something special •Wojnarowic:F**k you f*ggot f**ker(2020)- a pretty recent doc that truly shows the brutality of the Regan administration to the gay community during the AIDS crisis and also give roses to one of the most criminally underrated artist of that time. The title is also pulled directly from David’s paintings born from a homophobic doodle he found on the sidewalk.
anyone who hasn't seen this, i don't care about the list you have in ur notes app, watch this one next.
about a gay rights group (comprised of flaming gays) in 80s london who support this tiny welsh town over the course of the the miners strikes. its a true story and they portrayed it in such an earnest way. its funny, and it hammers at your heartstrings big time. cannot recommend enough
black queer history is FULL of forgotten legends who have shaped mainstream culture and continue to have a lasting impact on fashion, language, art & performance. Paris Is Burning immortalises and preserves the legacy and the stories of the people featured in this film along with the spaces, community and families they created for themselves in a society that consistently marginalised and discriminated against them. this is an essential watch!!!
