i’ve lived in both the South and the North throughout my life and while i don’t use it frequently, i will say Southerners really went off with this one. it’s even meaner when said to a non-Southerner who doesn’t know what it means… THE backhanded compliment of all time

i’m from northern alabama, and i’m not 100% sure this is completely southern, but it killllls me every time i hear an older relative say it. it’s so brutal. another one is ā€œyou think you’re shit on a stick, but you’re just a fart on a splinter!ā€ there are many more, but those are the first two to come to mind. they just don’t make sayings like they used to.

ā€˜hug my neck’ haunts me always. lovingly. just pops in my head: a hug, but not just anywhere, hug the neck, which irl can be anywhere without question, but the invitation is always as such ā€˜can’t speak?!’ haunted me lately, popped up and startled me. so audacious. you see someone avoiding you or just making their way to speak to others and you bark out ā€˜can’t speak?!’ pronounced cayn-t. and always as a 'non-plussed yet still offended' question

i had it for a little over a year until i was like wow this is actually terrible! i genuinely think it has negatively impacted society by ruining people’s attention spans, having a horrific algorithm, and most of all by the most mind-numbing or outright harmful trends - fake words that people now use IRL (ā€œunaliveā€), trad wife tiktok, shein hauls, body-focused fitness vids that encourage fatphobia and unhealthy habits, shallow political/feminist theory and queer discourse, ā€œalpha maleā€ podcaster tiktok, encouraging overconsumption in general, trends ruining local spots or niche things… the list goes on
