An absolute classic, I do recommend all Satoshi Kon movies, and his serialized anime Paranoia Agent. But I would start with his biggest classic Perfect Blue.
The animation is beautiful, the character designs look very distict and each location feels very specific, specially Mima's room, giving a real sense of personhood to the character.
The story features Kon's critique of not only Japanse mass entertainment, but celebrity culture in general. It feels specially relevant in curret days where the concept of having a persona separate from yourself feels more and more common for most people.
Quickly becoming a huge Kiyoshi Kurosawa fan. I loved Cure (top 5 for me) and Pulse was really great too. His films really get under your skin and create a distinct feeling of dread.
Animated psychological horror.
There is one scene with a simulated rape (protagonist is acting in a tv episode). Even so, itβs unsettling. See also Magnetic Rose.
His films are so funny and smart and calculated. It's all about the sinister nature of humanity and fears. They're not at all boring and they're super classic genre so.
