at one time, when i drank too much, i really liked bukowski and keats. i wouldn’t say this is my favorite poem by any stretch, but it’s one that always pops into my head when i leave my shoes lying around, and that’s gotta count for something.

I know bukowski is kind of the worst- but this one is too good.

first poem i loved and kept with me as a ripe 7th grader. read over and over to the point where it plays in my head, little things will remind me of it - foggy nights in the city or the ocean in winter or pondering my own mortality - and lines come flowing back
others stuck in my noggin include style by charles bukowski and the sunflower sutra by allen ginsberg. at this point i can probably recite a good number of billy collins works bc ive listened to the recorded album "the best cigarette" approximately 500 times

i’m so happy to be prompted to think about poetry! ada limon is one of my favorites, as is marcus amaker (who will be at p&t knitwear next week!), caki wilkinson, and catherine cohen (for poems that make you laugh). billy collins was my poetry gateway drug—we read picnic, lightning in 12th grade and my brain changed forever. but my absolute, all time, desert island writer is ross gay—his poetry is devastating and beautiful and funny and he also writes nonfiction that is really amazing. his book ā€œbe holdingā€ is a genius book length poem about a single basketball play by dr. j (i don’t care about sports). happy poem-ing!!!!!!

was walking through the MusĆ©e d’Orsay alone after a breakup, contemplating renunciation and renting a turn of the century efficiency apartment with an iron bed when i got back home, and this painting stopped me in my tracks.

i used to do this for a living and it was a job that only got attention when we made a mistake, and is taken for granted when done right. i captioned the 2018 world series game that went 18 innings, plus pre- and post-game coverage, for a total of over 8 hours on air with no breaks but commercials. now i smile when i see a bar is playing a game with the captions on. a real person is on the other end working hard to give you the best experience!
