Wood's label has put out some great indie rock from a some of my favorite artists over the last handful of years – Anna St. Louis, Bonny Doon, John Andrews & The Yawns, early Kurt Vile, Kevin Morby, White Fence, and has, in turn, been responsible for a bunch of my favorite concerts both pre and post-pandemic shutdown. The Bonny Doon dudes are real nice. I linked a recent set of theirs, my favorite bootleg I've come across on YouTube. I've seen them 5 times now and chatted with them after their last set in Philly. Woodsist' yearly two-day festival in Accord, NY in 2021 was my first festival coming out of lockdown and was the perfect, laid-back event I was missing. That year I saw Sessa, Cassandra Jenkins, Anna St. Louis, 75 Dollar Bill, Natural Information Society, Woods, Kurt Vile (solo), Kevin Morby, Parquet Courts, and Yo La Tengo – just unreal and so well-curated. Pictured below: Woods playing in a small bar in Fishtown, September 2023. Anna St. Louis opened on the tail of her recently-released album, In The Air.

I saw him on tour with Hamilton. Kevin used to be in Woods, also his former band The Babies were fun.

Parquet Courts, Big Thief, Yo La Tengo were all great live, and I’d see them again

in no particular order -a place for owls - a denver based indie/emo band with gorgeous writing and lush instrumentation -LL by The Hellp - the most important electronic/pop album of the 2020s, this album more than justifies their self-mythologizing of the past decade -Mk.Gee - he's finally getting his flowers thank god but there is nothing else that sounds like two star out there -Tigers Blood by Waxahatchee - Waxahatchee with MJ Lenderman executive production what more do you need -Aaron West & the Roaring Twenties - conceptual side project of the lead singer of emo cornerstone The Wonder Years, he plays/writes the character of Aaron West across three beautiful alt country albums -Venturing - Jane Remover's side project, great rock/contemporary shoegaze, album out valentine's day

Maybe not *the best* but it was certainly one of the more enjoyable movie theater experiences I’ve had. December 2019, went to a 6pm weekday showing on a whim after a friend called me to see if I could go. I knew next to nothing about the plot, didn’t realize the whole thing would be in black and white and screened in an almost-square aspect ratio, yet was enthralled for every second of it.
Turned out to be the last movie I saw in theaters pre-pandemic.
