widely regarded as the first sub saharan african feature film, it follows the life of a young girl moving from dakar to work for a french colonial family as a nanny. it ended up being completely made in french instead of senegalese wolof because of interference from the french ministry of cooperation and film bureau. i think it’s one of those movies everyone who likes film should see at least once. btw if you’re interested in hearing what wolof sounds like, touki bouki is the film for you (check tws).

went to a free screening of The Battle of Algiers last night. meant to see it for years but there’s just something about watching something on a big screen and traveling there that is so much better. I went with my girlfriend, lover, and my lover’s friend from out of town. definitely worth a watch. it’s pretty dense even as a loosely based historical film but it makes me want to read more about Algerian history.
