My Latin class was cancelled two days before the start of this semester, so I had to scramble to find any open language section that would take me. An impossibly cruel stroke of misfortune placed me in a French course. Now, even after this waking hell is over, I have to take ANOTHER consecutive semester of it as a requirement for my linguistics degree. The cancellation of that Latin class effectively bound me to a year of learning a language I have no practical or academic interest in or use for. Thanks PCC!

murdonner it might not be if I hadn’t fallen severely behind due to personal circumstances. My irritation is misdirected, French is a fine language. I just fucked up so badly that I am ending this course with a very poor foundation for French II. I am anxious and sad

Aside from math, foreign languages were my absolute worst subject in school. It was never taught in a way that made sense to me (Why am I learning grammatical rules before I can actually converse with someone?)
I've subsequently never forced myself to start on it.

I must admit that at first I didn’t enjoy my French class (le prof parle trop lentement), but it’s starting to grow on me! I’ve adopted the mindset that learning does not have to be the fast, competitive process I experienced at school. Language comes slowly and there is something to learn from everyone.

When I awake in my pajamas, I feel the weight of my responsibility to start the day. When I wake up fully dressed for the day, it feels as though one day never ended and another never began, and I am only casually rejoining the waking realm, as an anonymous fish tossed back into a river. Merging again into the queue that began long before I was born, that never once paused to observe an absence; ever-lengthening, ever-advancing, I have never seen the same person twice.
