children's tv shows as language learning resources

proud of myself for watching barbapapa with no subtitles and understanding it all. it really boosted my confidence in my french and aided my listening skills... peppa pig is another that i've tried, but i preferred barbapapa because it was originally in french so it just seems like a better choice in my brain. give it a go! they have fun storylines too and they're cute and the episodes are like between five and fifteen minutes. an interesting supplement to a language learning journey

telling people that english is not my first language

oh no i’m not apologising. i’m braggjng. my mom showed me educational english cartoons instead of normal ones and put me in five different language courses. i’m cool.

clicked on this video cause it looked interesting and i started reading the subtitles till i realised they're speaking my mother tongue (sindhi) !! so so wild, i watched the entire video with a huge smile on my face

staring at nothing when you first wake up

when i was younger i would wake up and just sit up in bed staring at literally nothing for five mins, just letting thoughts pass me by and not focusing on anything in particular -- truly a great way to start the day is to sit in silence and stillness for a few mins (in hindsight i may have stumbled into meditation without meaning to but suffice to say i'm doing this again now and it's the best!)

Think long term

lots of great responses in this thread! just wanted to say that true change takes so much longer than we expect it to. I started on a journey of “changing my life” and my attitude towards it back in 2020, and its only now in 2024 that I’m starting to see major changes that I can trace back to that original decision to improve my life. Sure, there’s been lots of rewarding little milestones along the way, but the big things take time. The lesson is, don’t be hard on yourself if you make changes but your life isn’t tangibly improved next month. Make changes for your long-term future self :)
