a great site to source some one-of-a-kind vintage furniture and design pieces. fair warning, shipping can be prohibitive for larger items so i'd suggest filtering for local results. or make a fun road trip out out of it - i've been thinking about going to montreal to claim a very underpriced michel cadestin space age chair.

The only way to reliably buy furniture, if you ask me. I’m biased (newsletter), but I’ve used it heavily myself. Lots of good stuff, many styles, Italian, new regency, mcm, deco, avant… things go for nothing because 1. nobody really knows anything about furniture and 2. it can sometimes require work to arrange. But if you’re willing to put in 2% time and effort you can get legit excellent old gear (or new I guess) for dirt cheap, two or three price stratospheres below retail, and way below what anything good asks on a curated IG account. Honestly everything just sells to the same dozen set decorators and re-sellers. The catch is the good stuff tends to be centered around LA, NY and Dallas. But even if you live in Seattle this is the only way of buying furniture that doesn’t involve actually lighting money on fire, or compromise.

Like I said before about eBay, it's the best. My favorite search terms these days are "antique oddity lot junk drawer," "vintage courrèges," "vintage cacharel," "vintage ungaro," "vintage louis feraud," "antique medical bedpan urinal enamel," and "vintage enamel vase." Also fun to mis-spell things that should be very expensive and see if anyone has discovered them, e.g. "Gugci purse." Idk it’s hard to go to estate sales when you live in nyc and I love this shit mostly for art and expensive jewelry which you can sometimes score for so little

had at least 3 birthdays here when I was a kid. it was a massive subterranean mars-themed restaurant with an elevator that looked and felt like a rocket ship (even though it only actually went 2 floors down). pretty sure they turned it it into din tai fung.

Caught it at Metrograph last night. A true masterpiece about the nature of work and identity in Japan and beyond. I left thinking “maybe Sisyphus did have a choice?”

I think about this line from virgil abloh's lecture at columbia's architecture school all the time, which is about the Yeezus album cover. a testament to how, when you put in enough hours, sometimes you create work that transcends your current capabilities - even if just by chance.
