Thereās just something about that scratches an itch I canāt rightly describe. Learning languages feels good and opens so many doors, it activates a part of my brain that I donāt think Iāve used enough. This year Iām trying to get back on the habit of learning Mandarin (which I studied for eight years, yet still feel woefully inadequate speaking), Yiddish (which I spent one year learning, but have since lapsed), and/or French (which Iāve never tried to learn, but thereās a first for everything!)
Languages are my weak-spot. I find them very difficult to learn and donāt enjoy learning them but I realllyyyy wish I could. maybe now Iāve learnt how to play chess a language will be my next āthing Iām bad atā to do? i would like to learn sight language but thatās really hard to do without an in person teacher, so maybe Iāll learn Spanish
Classically people will say this is good for you, and the truth is thatās because it is!!! It takes time to truly āenterā a new language, but once you get there, it will open your brain up to whole new structures of thinking. I have been learning German for the last year and today I had an actually mind blowing experience in class. It was very emotional! Awe inducing⦠Not to mention that memorizing new words and grammar structures will make you feel soooo smart. Also practicing something daily and noticing yourself getting better is amazing! And then, in the end, youāll be able to talk to more people on this earth? What a gift.
A website with a collection of screengrabs from nearly every movie you could think of, and you can sort by film title, director, cinematographer, year, genre, country, etc. Great for visual references for lookbooks, or just to discover a new film you might be interested in seeing! I've attached one of my favorite stills, a great moment from Chungking Express (Dir. Wong Kar-Wai, 1994).
At my local indie cinema for a projection of the new Nosferatu, infinitely grateful I have a place like this I can go to see new stuff and incredible programming!
Just going out and picking up any kind of used physical media (books, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes) makes the archivist in me happy, like Iām preserving somebody elseās story/ enjoyment of something My personal favorite thing is VHS tapes, Iāve got a decent collection (all thrifted) and theyāre usually the cheapest things offered
