Not hard to understand; hard to live.“ - Leslie Feinberg (10th anniversary edition) heartwrenching from start to finish. a warm hug for someone like me. i can’t really criticize the writing of this book, just because it’s the uniqueness and importance of this story that sets it apart. it is a story that absolutely needed to be written. what’s even more amazing is that such simple writing could capture the lived intricacies of gender and sexuality in so many shades. i had never felt seen like this.

holy shit! this was my first book of 2024, and to say it had a big impact on me would be understating the situation dramatically. picked it up while traveling and started reading on the train back, absolutely could not put it down. i had a delightful and new experience of finding sections of prose that resonated so strongly with me, i felt compelled to just stop and reread the lines a few times in place. the characters manage to feel both intimately real and magically unreal, in a way that makes the book feel like a dream, familiar but hazy. fair warning that reading this book is one of a handful of things that helped me realize i was a girl, ymmv

the empathy exams by leslie jamison

i read this for the first time when i was 19 and it shaped me so much. every time i’ve revisited it, i get something else out of it. a triumphant exploration of pain both physical and emotional, identity, morality, violence, and tenderness

The seep by Chana Porter

This book was part of my challenge for myself to read more books from queer perspectives this year. It’s now become one of my favourite books, period. I feel like this book speaks primarily about identity, queerness, grief and drug use. But, it also explores these in a world where capitalism doesn’t exist any longer, which I found really brought depths to the story in unexpected ways for me. Chana Porter is a genius and I just cannot express how excellent this short book is.
