If I have an opportunity to put a bay leaf in something, you'd better believe it's going in there. So simple, so delish, AND makes me feel like a witch. Here's a picture of the Platonic ideal of a bay leaf I put in my rice yesterday. Magical.

chiawase_ tbh I think a lot of times it’s not used to its full potential and falls flat! the flavor compounds in bay leaves are oil based so if you just throw it in a big pot of water it really doesn’t do much other than give you a cute little leaf floating on top of your dish. I have learned from (primarily Indian) cooking that it is an absolute necessity to heat the bay leaf in some sort of oil/fat to ACTUALLY get the flavor out. I’ll throw a couple in when my pan heats up with oil before adding other aromatics and being careful not to burn. It’s remarkable what a difference it makes and the whole dish is imparted with a deep aromatic quality and the actual “bay leaf” flavor which used to be so elusive to me! Next time you make a soup or beans absolutely try this method, you will fall in love w this humble leaf 🍃

worldonfire i need to try this in a more sauté manner. I have used the bay leaf in a chicken cacciatore recipe recently, but i was still confused 😂 i remember telling a friend of mine that i wanted to do a test; make the same dish, one with bay leaf one without, and see what difference it makes

chiawase_ best way to be converted to a Bay Leaf Believer™️ is to pop one in a pot of rice. make sure you put a lil oil or butter in there too (#MajorKeyAlert!). I guarantee you'll see the truth...report back if you try it :)

somehow i went 21 years without utilizing this wonderful herb. so sweet. so yummy. i’ve been putting it in everything i make recently: pasta (especially good on gnocchi), eggs, toast, tofu, breakfast sandwiches, potatoes, anything you can think of! and it apparently improves memory! the perfect seasoning!!

I've been into them this spring. I use lovage instead of fresh curry leaves sometimes. I can't grow curry leaves.

COME AND TAKE IT. In a better world, I would have a flip phone. In this world, I'm at least keeping my damn home button. Call me a luddite, but Tim Apple went too far with this one. The home button I have on my phone isn't even a real button – it's got that weird haptic tech wizardry thing that makes it feel like you're "clicking" it when you're really not. And that is something I hate, but not as much as I would hate having nothing there at all.
