Nello stile si sente tanto la scuola surrealista di Saunders, ma la sostanza è tutta dell’autore, che ha la capacità del maestro di esporre gli abomini della società contemporanea senza farlo esplicitamente, dal punto di vista di un millennial afroamericano. Non tutti i racconti sono memorabili, su tutti spiccano I 5 della Finkelstein, Venerdì Nero e Dopo il Lampo (in cui si intravedono sprazzi di quel capolavoro che sarà poi Catene di Gloria).

short story about a girl stuck in a time loop and learning to kill everyone in said time loop really quickly, admittedly i did read for the first time bc of a jacob geller video essay on time loop nihilism (also very good) but its one of those things that has stuck with me and i’m not quite sure why. if i was an english teacher i would force my class to read and analyze it so do what you want with that

HARD RAIN FALLING BY DON CARPENTER

A crime novel that is shockingly nihilistic and angry as well as hopeful and contemplative all at once. Starts off simple but unfurls into a sprawling meditation on identity, race, parenthood, gambling, and incarceration. Very special book

Invisible Man (1952)

This book took me way longer to finish than I would've liked, and I feel like a near month's break I took in the middle definitely hurt some of the momentous momentum it has. Invisible Man at times reads more like a collection of short stories, if only for the miraculously structured chapters and expansive situations it traverses, traveling from genre to genre, at times Kafka-esque body horror, at others pure social satire. The varying shades and tones are not an oversight, however, but rather the rare case of a novel whose point is seen most clearly through a kaleidoscope, communicating not a summarizable idea but an entire way of looking at the world, one where subjugation is a near inevitable death sentence, where visibility is a constant battle, and where ideology is just the raw meat charlatans butcher and sell to the masses. Bleak, hilarious, and always flowing (seriously, the prose in this is just outstanding Americana), Invisible Man lives up to its reputation as a genuinely unclassifiable enigma in the canon.
