I did this recently too! Frank Zappa is unmarked under a tree on the far right if you’re entering 🧡

I grew up in a puerto rican household so West Side Story was mandatory viewing and Natalie Wood’s performance was so good that I was genuinely convinced she was from the island for years. It was total whiplash to find out that she was Russian/Ukranian and my dumbass didn’t know the whole time (she’s still from PR in my heart though).

You’d think it would be somewhere prominent and fancy, but in reality, their gravesite is at a small cemetery off of a normal street and little church in Rockville, MD. The gravestone is carved with a quote from “The Great Gatsby”— So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. And people leave daisies and booze when they visit. I popped by their grave with a friend last fall, after attending an artist talk and grabbing soup dumplings for lunch. Paying your respects on a quiet afternoon can be simple and spontaneous. Makes me want to find more greats in Chicago to leave stones and mementos at.

Back in February, I lost my friend and coworker, Paul. He was the first person to pass that I had spent almost every day with for years. The ironic part was the morning i found out, I had just been thanking the universe that I never had to go through that pain. An hour later I found out he was gone. Paul was very special, a one of a kind guy who built a life for himself through his love for art and music. He was an old school punk who was in a few bands back in the 90’s that helped shape the local music scene (Poo Poo Stick and Rotten Gramma). He started the tattoo shop I work at back in 2004 in the hopes of taking in good people who just needed a chance to show their skills. It’s been voted the best shop in the area by locals every year since ~2010. He loved Star Wars and Radiohead, loved doing my dumb skits for the shop’s social media, and had an affinity for butts unlike any other man I’ve ever met. In between tattoos, he would sit on the couch and we would just talk for hours. i still think I see him sometimes when I’m turning the corner when I come into the shop sometimes. We just started cleaning out his tattoo station, and well.. it hasn’t been easy for any of us. Neither has having to tell people over the phone that he has passed away nearly weekly, and then having to continue on with my day like normal. This afternoon was especially hard for me, so I figured I’d share the love with you folks so more of the world can know how cool this guy was.

I have family buried here from generations ago. My grandmother told me that before she got sick. I thought she was lying. One day I came across my uncommon name (with an even more uncommon spelling) on a sequence of graves, and it turns out that she was right. Even though our family has scattered in the generations since, this is one place I can return to feel close to my bloodline, to feel like I am in the right place. It’s a beautiful cemetery & it’s nice to come home to where our experiment (unsuccessful as it sometimes feels) in being happy began.

if you love a really famous musician or a major studio movie, you can probably find some bizarre promotional item on the internet. they’re often too rare to purchase. but i DID just order a set of madonna russian nesting dolls from the music era, so it can be done
