“Nobody Lives Without Love” by Eddi Reader and “Life Of Surprises” by Prefab Sprout

If we had gotten married, Danny and I would have played these songs at our wedding, for sure. We used to play “Nobody Lives Without Love" from one of our phones and sing it together walking around Chinatown at like 3am. It was on the Batman Forever soundtrack but feels long lost. We liked the dramatic buildup and the sincere vocals, but lyrically, it might also crystalize something about our relationship and individual outlooks. It’s about giving yourself over to some recklessness—this can all go away, sure, but even if you think the pain wasn’t worth it, you can’t totally suppress a desire to love and live fast. Similarly, the sentiment expressed by “Life Of Surprises” is one to live and die by. Danny had a Prefab Sprout tattoo on his leg, and it wasn’t a logo or album art or anything, just the name in simple prison-style font, as in: the very concept of this band, their entire catalogue. When we’d listen to “Life Of Surprises,” he would turn to me and look into my eyes when he sang the lyric, “Never let your conscience be harmful to your health” and I’ll feel that forever now.

Love songs

Every Valentine’s Day I ask everyone who follows me on Instagram their fave long song. Mine, for the record, is If I Were A Carpenter, the Four Tops version though Bob Dylan has a great cover with The Band. Recently I’ve been obsessed with Just Drifting by Psychic TV and think it’s one of the most romantic songs I’ve ever heard. “In My Mind”

A new version of an old song; an old song, “L’Amour Toujours” by Gigi D’Agostino, made slower and more lethargic by a teenage Lithuanian DJ. A song about dreams, about the things you’ve been waiting for, coming down to you, but only in your mind. A tale as old as time!In London in the Noughties I never went to Italo disco clubs. But my buddy Joel, a fantastic furniture designer, did. He told me the first time he went, as a teenager, he was standing in line outside, hoping to get in, and an elegant lady stepped out of the club wearing a silk gown, smoking, walking a ferret on a leash. That’s how he knew he was in the right place.D’Agostino wears a lot of hats. Often he dresses like a pilot. He’s been a mega Italo disco star since the Eighties, his music gives the feeling of driving around Tuscany at sunset in a sports car. His “Bitter Sweet Symphony” is sublime. The sound of Italy and England in perfect romantic harmony; Byron swimming to Shelley across the Bay of Poets.

Prosciutto

Prosciutto. Light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Pro-ciu-tt0. There’s something about a strip of glistening, rose-pink cured meat that I just can't seem to resist, a weakness that earned me the nickname ‘ham hands’ growing up. Which I don’t often share with people but here we are.

All you really need TBH. Great for chapped lips, highlighting the cheekbones and on the eyes for an expensive glazed look.  Don’t sleep on it.
