Not to directly call out PI staff writer @BRAD-PHILLIPS but I happen to be reading Essays and Fiction right now after lots of friends recommended it and its so fucking good. It's sad and strange and makes me laugh but also breaks my heart.

When we had Brad Phillips on the newsletter I still hadn’t read this book. Shame on me. Essays and Fictions is an incredibly sincere collection of essays on addiction and trauma, that lands somewhere between fiction and autobiography. I was glued to it front to back. This book breathed new life into my reading habits and I’ve since read Bret Easton Ellis’ Less Than Zero and I’m halfway through Denis Johnson’s Jesus’ Son.

Everyone should read 'Essays and Fictions' by Brad Phillips at least once in their life. It's just so accurate to the experience of addiction in the most abstract ways.

This book says ā€œA Memoir in Verseā€ on its cover but it DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU DON’T ā€œGETā€ POETRY OR HATE IT EVEN. This book will change your mind. This is the funniest most fucked up book you will ever be lucky enough to read. Seriously do yourself a favor and get it because I can’t describe seeing a sunset while having an orgasm anymore than I can describe this book.

School made us think reading is a holy act. It is not. Its just something to do. Like watching a movie or sports. You aren’t going to be tested by anyone. Read high. Read drunk. Read 2 pages. Read half awake. Remember nothing or just some of it. It really doesn’t matter
