You take so many photos throughout your life; how many of those will you actually ever look at again? How many memories will you actually remember? I have so many photos on my phone, 10 years worth of history- but I only recall the context for about half of them, if that much. This photo is from August 27, 2019, 8:47pm. I could not tell you why I chose to record this random instant, or what this is even an instant of. But nonetheless I’ve carried the instant with me ever since. Because at one point it was not random; it was something, no matter its insignificance, that I wanted to remember.

Without sounding like a bitter luddite, I miss the days of people capturing moments for the sake of remembering, not sharing with strangers. We all have childhood VHS footage and disposable photos of seemingly mundane moments at family BBQs, birthday parties, vacations, etc, but in the iPhone age most of our photos are taken with the intention of posting. This is a crucial difference, for me at least, so I recommend getting a camera not because it takes better photos than your phone, but because it'll remind you to capture more regular slices of life.

Collections of digital photos are more ephemeral than we think. I make it a point to periodically order prints of my favorite photos from each year. The material stuff doesn’t last forever either, but unless you’re a fastidious digital archivist, the physical may stick around longer. As someone who’s witnessed the slow death of a couple of social media websites and personal computers, those photos of friends, family or a building you liked the look of in 2015 often land in the internet graveyard. There’s an inherent value to the tangible and the touchable. The fact that I still have photos of my mom as a teenager astounds me.

ever since I lost all the photos I took on my iphone 5S back in 2018 I have SWORN to always back up my camera roll to each new phone I get my hands on!! I am SUCH a hoarder for screenshots and atp there’s just way too many to reasonably filter through so Ive just accepted that they all can stay. screenshots of conversations with people who I don’t even speak to anymore. Screenshots of assorted instagram memes that i wanted to send to certain people years ago. They all served a purpose once upon a time and now they get to retire into the depths of familiarity amidst the other masses of images I have no reason to keep. But I keep them anyway. Maybe in 50 years time when my body and soul is uploaded into the cloud I will be able to walk back down through my camera roll and relive the memories I decided not to delete. That would be nice

I love that this is becoming more mainstream in recent years. It makes these animals vastly more interesting and complex than they already were. The connection between dinosaurs and birds feels all the more meaningful and apparent, and opens the door to interpreting their behavior and dynamics- we have their living relatives today to learn from. Also, it is cute.

If you mix tumeric powder with olive oil it makes a paste that you can put on the bite a couple times for like an hour. It is an anti-inflammatory and over a couple days should help pain and swelling.
I think garlic has similar effects too!
