Collections of digital photos are more ephemeral than we think. I make it a point to periodically order prints of my favorite photos from each year. The material stuff doesn’t last forever either, but unless you’re a fastidious digital archivist, the physical may stick around longer. As someone who’s witnessed the slow death of a couple of social media websites and personal computers, those photos of friends, family or a building you liked the look of in 2015 often land in the internet graveyard. There’s an inherent value to the tangible and the touchable. The fact that I still have photos of my mom as a teenager astounds me.

Been really getting into getting my disposable kodak film developed and keeping them in a cute little photo album and it got me thinking. My whole teen years have been documented on facebook and instagram or whatever and if anything were to happen to those platforms or if someone deletes their account those photos are GONE. Download your tagged photos, make a cute little photo album of them so that you know they aren't going to go anywhere. No matter how dumb they might seem, they are precious.

i found a box of my parent’s photos from when they first started dating to their wedding and around when i was born and made me realize: 1. there is so much more life to live!! and i hope i can look back on my 20’s with the same fondness they do 2. how nice it is to have physical photos - i never go through my camera roll but i love revisiting old journals or scrapbooks and i think printing photos would have the same effect. i find that the phone camera effect almost makes taking pictures feel more disposable or practical rather than artistic (for me personally, ik a lot of people who have really nice camera rolls on their phones) so maybe getting a camera or just thinking about memory capture differently would aim me in this direction

it feels so good to flip through a stack of photos and point at them rather than swipe through looking for a good one part of it i think is that if you’re printing photos you’re forced to do the curation on the front end of the process. doesn’t matter how you print them. i got a little instax printer bc im a former tumblr girl but i also have a membership with mootsh that gives you a little monthly set of prints plus a contact sheet that help me stay on top of capturin and curating memories through the year.

When a friend is trying to describe something and has to resort to drawing it, with limited skill, the results are always wonderful. Amateurish doodling in general is a good thing.

These aren’t always the most accurate, but it’ll usually get you within spitting distance of the correct info. It’s a great way to learn about the flora, fauna, insects and spiders in your area. Taxonomy is really interesting and the names are half the fun.

It seems to me that when people hear “ASMR” they picture someone pouring sand into a bucket or chewing mashed potatoes or something. Those have their place but the real shit for me are these fantasy-leaning, themed environment ASMR vids with titles like “Victorian Era Ambience - Soft Rain Sounds, Horses, Crows, Bell Sounds” or “Old Library Sounds”. They’re accompanied by slightly animated CGI images kinda like a video game menu screen. I think I first developed a taste for this kinda stuff watching my older brother play Resident Evil 2 as a kid. The sound design and visuals were so transportative. I was thrilled. A lot of my pastimes, in one way or another, are about transporting myself mentally to another time and place. These are a great assist.Â
