Was going through instagram stories for the first time in months. Nothing wrong with using social media in the right way or really however you want to. I just really don’t miss it when I avoid it and when I go back I like it less and less.
PI feels like an exception- it’s a much purer form. Not trying to kiss ASS here, but it kinda just feels like old twitter which was a happy place in the timeline of social media…

I feel that social media (at least the big four or five) has become a place of friends. It’s basically become “how many people can I collect to watch my follower count go up”. It’s created a toxic environment that creates competition in all aspects of life. Which is unfortunately all too prominent

PI is different because you’re not trying to impress anyone or present a carefully crafted persona. You can be away from this site for days or weeks and come back when you’re in the mood. You won’t miss out on anything viral or some big news.
That said, if you don’t need this in your life, go free!

Social media has always stressed me the hell out because, by the time I joined, every platform I was on already had a very established culture I guess?
I waited a very long time to join instagram, and when I finally did, it was pretty deep into the influencer era and around the same time Meta was starting to lean harder into the advertising and engagement-bait (reels, non-chronological timeline where random posts were prioritized over ones from actual friends) so it never really felt like a fully social space to me. People I knew would spend hours with their friends asking each other for approval on curated posts about group hangouts, and I just felt like there were a bunch of "rules" about how to present yourself that I wasn't clued in on.
Being on here is refreshing because it's the first time I've ever experienced a young social network! There's no pressure, no expectation, no heavy advertising, no lifestyle influencers, no way to monetize your posts and turn it into a side hustle, etc. Everyone just kind of talks about stuff they enjoy!
It's made me realize why so many people are nostalgic for the myspace and early instagram days for sure haha

Went cold-turkey off IG/FB a couple months back and had already ditched Twitter a couple years ago. It was a weird switch at first (especially IG). There are just some people I'm probably never going to be in contact with again, and for others, I won't have passive daily updates on their lives. Honestly, I think that's normal. It's just not the cultural norm. There are definitely things I miss and events I don't know about, but I'm still filling my life with great things and am just texting people instead. This place has effectively been a public gratitude journal, and Bluesky is where I can still toss unhinged takes into the void as well as get my news. As with most millennials, I'm admittedly still wired to seek validation from people on the internet, but cutting out an algorithmic-driven life has been so much better for my mental health. The more I learn about the perils of big tech, the more I wish people in my life felt empowered to do the same, but I get that people have complex relationships with the big platforms.
Edit: I guess I also have Substack, but the 'social' aspects of it are so unappealing, I hardly ever look at it.

This is not an endorsement. I’m more thinking along the lines of observing them like wildlife.
