Def didn’t come up with this but the concept has been stuck in my head ever since I saw a Tik-Tok about itā€¦ā€everyone wants to have a village, no one wants to be a villagerā€ Being in community with others relies on our time investments, financial investments, other resource investments, etc depending on what we can offer—but I truly believe we must offer SOMETHING when we can (when it’s safe, not going to put you in harm, etc.) When my neighbor asked me to cat sit I found it, admittedly, odd at first. (Being from a tight laced suburb does that to you) And was another thing I had to add my to agenda for the day. But I did it, because being a good neighbor is one of my core-est values. And now we always chat, wave, and I know I can count on them when I’m in need. Neighbor relationships are such a lost vestige šŸ’” We are all we really have. Now more than EVER! Let yourself be a villager, even if it means it’s a little annoying to have more people know they can rely on you, the feel-good of it will always outweigh the inconvenience.

Helping those around you, supporting them, doing the things nobody else wants to do, these are all ways to strengthen your bond to your community! How can you expect others to show up for you if you don’t show up for others?

It’s so hard thinking about the future of our world, so hard it makes doing anything almost impossible. at least that’s how ive felt for so long. Personally, the last year or so has been a massive revelation in the fact that we all need to be taking care of each other on a deeper level. Gone are the days of isolation and apathy. We do need to show each other that we care, because I think that with time, it’s going to continue even after we’re all gone. Caring for your community can look like so many different things. Being involved with your local businesses and organizations. Checking in on friends and family, volunteering your time to other people when you can. Get involved with your local government! I feel as though this is the type of patriotism our country has needed for such a long time, but we’ve swung too far away from it. There are still going to be issues that come up, even with an amazing community by our side, but I think it makes it easier to deal with when you know you have people who care about others around you.

my friend was visiting and asked me to help her with the merch booth she was working. and it brought me so much joy. in these current horrors, help your friends. you know what other things bring joy to my life? going grocery shopping with my friends. driving people to the airport. reading books beside each other in coffee shops. helping someone find an obscure pepper paste in town. selling shirts at a country show. trying to find an obscure theory book together for book club. sitting on someone's kitchen floor while they do dishes. you can't complain about the lack of community you experience without being apart of your immediate community, the small things happen to be the most fun and rewarding things to be a part of. support your loved ones.

I’ve been talking to my therapist a lot and finding a lot of healing in reminding myself that I’m growing into someone that little me would’ve thought was really cool—especially when it feels hard to like myself Listening to the same music, loving the same movies, loving to read, changing up my look, loving clothes, loving animals. A lot of these things made me feel weird or nerdy at the time now feel so core to myself. I’m just baby me in a bigger body, we all are āļø
