i have been wanting to get a new tattoo and i have been looking at fashion illustrations for inspo.
I came across Ms. Sugimoto and her work always gave me butterflies. Though her work was produced in the 90s - 2010s it’s reminiscent of illustrations from the 60s and 70s; where artists like Akemi Watabe and Antonio Lopez were popular. Also, it also reminds me of Jeffrey Fulvimari (the illustrator behind Madonna‘s children’s book series, The English Roses).
Theres not much information on her, so i went on a tiny search through Japanese blogs to see if anyone had more insight on her life.
Sadly no images of her, but i found her friend posting about her even in 2024. Yuko passed away in 2011 after a short illness and in 2013 they had an exhibition of her work in Osaka. Her website is still being maintained too.
I like finding out new facts on obscure entities so I got my fix last night. Now I’m going to order her illustration book off Mercari to add to my coffee table book collection.
